MedZZZ
Hi, I am choosing my 4th year electives now. I am currently interested in FM and IM and unfortunately I can't make up my mind between the two at this point. I am currently doing 6 weeks of FM electives and 10-12 weeks of IM electives. I currently have 4 weeks of CTU at my home school and 2 weeks of ICU. I am thinking of potentially doing another 2 weeks of OOP CTU as I've heard a lot of people do 6 weeks of CTU in total. I am wondering if 4 weeks of CTU is enough to match to IM or should I do an additional 2 weeks (total of 6 weeks) or is it going to hurt my application to FM in case I decide to rank FM higher? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
jebelalito
My two cents: you don’t need to do as many CTU electives to at least get interviews for residency. Focus on electives you want to do. If you do a lot of CTU, you may end up tired and may not impress as much. Look at the program descriptions for internal medicine programs across the country: most want an elective in internal medicine and some say that subspecialty and GIM electives are valued equally. This may help for FM too. MedZZZ
