Hello all,

As a student keen on applying to an Ontario Med School, I was wondering if awards matter too much? I have lots of EC's but the only award I have is Deans Honor List, which isn't that much of an achievement. I was wondering if A.) will that hurt my application and B.) if there is any way I can maybe sign up for an award (a competition etc.) in very short notice. I would appreciate any help or advice. Stay safe.

Sincerely,

A scared pre-med

Awards absolutely matter, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you NEED them to have a strong application. Awards that recognize involvement in the community, leadership, scholarly ability (Dean’s list is a decent one but most people applying will likely have it), awards for distinction in a certain area, winning competitions in your ECs, etc.

My advice is to simply look into what awards you’d be eligible for and apply. This is largely dependent on the school you go to, your major and what you’re involved in. See what your school has to offer, and see what kind of competitions might be in line with your extracurriculars.

As far as I know all of the awards my university gives out are either after the application deadline for this cycle, or are for those who are in financial need. In addition, I am applying for only this year. Do you know of any awards that are open right now? Anyways, thank you for your help and stay safe.
