Is shadowing needed to apply to dental school?

Recommended Posts

I am planning to apply next cycle and was hoping to shadow this summer. Due to COVID19 I don't think this will be possible.

Is shadowing required to apply to dental school? Will I be at a disadvantage without it?

I only had a few hours of shadowing. My friend had none.

Both of us got interviews from UT and western.

For western, there is a section asking for shadowing experience, you are given a chance to explain why you had little shadowing. You could write covid for example.

UT added personal essays this year, so maybe having shadowing experience would help you to write but it is not required.

It’s not required but strongly recommended. I didn’t have a lot of hours but, ended up doing a weeks worth of shadowing before I submitted my apps.
You should try your best to get some experience before you apply. At the very least you’ll be able to see if you actually like the profession.

I think it's important! I got an interview at Western w a few hours of shadowing, but my dad is a dentist. I don't think it's necessary to have a massive number of hours, but it's good to actually have experience seeing the profession - even if it's just a few hours.
