What is the process to get a Michigan license as Ontario Family Physician?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I was curious on this. If you are a licensed Family Medicine physician in Ontario, and you completed a 2 year Canadian family medicine residency, what is the process to get a Michigan Family Medicine license?

Is it a straightforward process? Do you have to write any tests, etc.?

(What if you completed medical school in Michigan as a Canadian, and came back to Canada for Family Medicine residency. How could you get a Michigan license?)

US requires 3 year FM residency. You will need to do a +1 or makeshift PGY3 year.

Why not just do your residency in the US? More straightforward and gaurantee of being able to practice in both places.

You will be paid more as a US resident, get the right 3 year amount of training, and already be in Michigan if thats where you want to practice. Then you can easily come back to Canada if you change your mind later.

Anyways literally the first result on google is the right one and it says you need all the USMLE exams but you might be good with only the 2 year residency? https://www.michigan.gov/documents/lara/MD_Licensing_Guide_654158_7.pdf

That is fair, my assumption was that OP was the same  person who was a US medical student that posted alot of similiar easily searchable questions  before, but for some reason made a new account?
