Moving for IP status

Recommended Posts

Living in any maritime province for a year without full time study leads to the establishment of the IP status. From what I am seeing, IP students are achieving around 25% acceptance rate: https://medicine.dal.ca/departments/core-units/admissions/about/class-profile.html

is this a good plan, I want to move out of Ontario anyways and I am debating which province to go to (Manitoba vs Maritime provinces).

Any insights?

Purely because of the numbers it is quite a bit easier to get in once you’re IP in not-Ontario, and the Maritimes are a great place to have IP status. That said you need to be living there for a year prior to the application deadline, so if you haven’t moved yet you’d have to skip this upcoming cycle to be considered IP (https://medicine.dal.ca/departments/core-units/admissions/admissions/place-of-residence.html).

Moreover though, I would prioritize where you want to live/work over just going off of the numbers game of med admissions. There’s no guarantees regardless of your hone province, and you’ll be spending a lot of time there after all is said and done. Plus, both Manitoba and the Maritimes have pretty good stats compared to ON when it comes to admissions, so I wouldn’t worry so much about the admissions aspect between these two. Go where you’ll be happiest imo
