Escape plan to the US, if no jobs in Canada?

Recommended Posts

So I am considering going into Ortho and we all know the job market is pretty terrible. Will moving to the US be a viable plan if I am left without a job after residency? I am willing to write the USMLEs.

From my researching some sources say that getting a visa is difficulty and I will be limited to academic positions without green card/citizenship. I am a Canada citizen and don't have residency status in the US. Will going to a US med school instead of a Canadian med school make it easier for me to get permanent status in the US?

I really don't like how Canada treats their hardworking specialists and I really need an escape plan if I can't secure a job in Canada as an Ortho attending.

Attending medical school and residency in the US will likely help you to stay on in the US more easily (e.g. marrying a partner who is American, more job opportunities will be offered to you from your colleagues / bosses who know others). However, Orthopedics in the US is significantly more difficult to match into compared to Canada and you frequently need to score >90th percentile on the Step 1 (moving to Pass/Fail in 2022).

It is possible to move to the US after a Canadian residency, but it won't be easy due to visa requirements. A few of the orthopedic residents I know have dual American-Canadian Citizenship, hence they were not afraid of the job market situation.

Best of luck!
