health&wellness&balance
Is medical school environment in Canada competitive? or does it depend on school?
takasugi
UofT probably is BC a lot of keeners and gunners go there At the school I go to, I was pleasantly surprised at how much everyone tries to help one another, share resources, etc Bambi
James Nystead
I think you don't feel as much pressure from the school but more so personal pressure depending on your specialty choice. If you want family, you prob won't be as stressed as if you wanted Derm or Ophtho or Plastics.
1D7
Schools that still use(d) grades have a competitive environment. In my time I believe the only schools that use grades instead of P/F were Quebec schools. I would say a hypercompetitive environment is rare in P/F schools, though a few people here and there may have some issues in clerkship. INTJ-A
I can only speak for UAlberta as I've just started it. We have a pass/fail curriculum so I think that definitely takes the edge off. Also it has been stated to us quite a few times during the orientation week that the program is no longer meant to stratify us as premed programs do, so again I am expecting far less competitiveness and quite a bit more collegiality than in undergrad. Cannot speak for any other schools but would be interested in hearing what they're like.
Hanmari
For some reason U of T has that rep, but even within U of T the majority aren't gunning for competitive specialties and are just fine regular students. And the gunners don't really openly compete either, it's not the Olympics. petitmonstre111, Mathmaximum and DrOtter
Bambi
School dependent. At my med school, students were collaborative, helpful, non-competitive.
