do general internists pay overhead?

just wanna know if general internists pay overhead if they are on salary (which i hear is aroun 250k or so. i'm assuming overhead is taken from that (say 40%) before taxes and what not. am i right on this?

I think it depends on what how you are employed. Generally hospital-based practice has no overhead, as the clinic you work in and the staff that staff (nurses, etc) are employees of the hospital. You might have to pay for a secretary if you have one, but usually they give you an office (especially if you are at a teaching hospital and have some academic work too).

 

If you have a private practice, then the overhead piles up, just like in a private community family docs office.

 

There is a critical shortage of general internists (they have the subspecialists covering the GIM shifts here in Kingston), so if you are one, you'll likely be able to negotiate these sorts of things in your contract.
