I'm brown so bargaining is in my blood ;). Recruiters have nothing on me haha.

as a great man once said, "take it and go"

As has been said, the MOTP and DOTP programs are somewhat competitive these days, so don't be sure you'll be selected anyway. If you tried to be a hardass about negotiations (or hinted at this during your interview), I wouldn't be surprised if they chose someone else instead.

Not trying to be an ass, but the times have changed and they've been clawing back on incentives (No more $40,000 signing bonus for MOTP, not sure if they had one for DOTP), and they know they can be a bit choosy about who they take.

I can speak a bit to the experience of being a 1st year MOTP. I was selected too late in the summer to be sent to any kind of training this last summer. As well, my upcoming summer is too short to accommodate even a shortened training program (they shorten the training to two 7 week programs for MOTP because of our shorter summers), so I'll be working in my local area, shadowing physicians and working on research/volunteer projects.

Anyone know how much pharmacists earn?

Pharmacist salary is similar to Dentist's salary.(The more you work the more you get).

It can be high just like it can be low.

A Pharmacist makes an Average of 95k/year,after about 5 years of experience, their salary gets to the 150k-200k/year,18% of Pharmacists made over 500k/year in 2009 here in Quebec, salaries are almost the same in other provinces, but hey, they must had about 20 years of experience and they may work at more than 1 place.

You can be a Pharmacist in the army,it pays a lot less, around the 70-100k/range but you have all social advantages, free healthcare, paid vacations.

Pros of being a Pharmacist:You have a life, decent hours, pretty good salary(above the average citizen.),Lots of practice perspectives, you can work independently,in big companies or simply at University.

Cons:-Lack of respect(You get dissed by some people, some idiots think you're here to count pills only, almost no one listens to your advices regarding health because they think physicians are the ones who know everything about medications.)

-Studying it can be a pain for some people.

uhhh. pharmacist definitely do not make that much, and do not make as much as a dentist.

maybe it's a french thing.

Well, most of the pharmacists who make above 150k/year work in more than 1 place.

They usually work 50-60 hours/week,at different places i.e:Pharmaceutic Consultant for a company, teacher or research scientist at university, shoppers drug mart...XD

Still,Pharmacists salary is not like U.S.(where they get MUCH less compared to us due to the saturation in major cities.)

Anyways,Med/Dent/Pharm/Opto=All winning solutions to live a good life.Just pick the one that suits you most,i've seen General surgeons making above 500k/year more sad than a Highschool Teacher making less than 50k/year...

I found it in some website that i don't remember anymore(summer time browsing lol)Well,it's not a joke,i'm not saying you can make above 150k/year by working 40 hours/week...you have to work a lot more and lots of factor get into account to reach that income.Yes,the avg salary of a Pharmacist is around 95k/year,there's a shortage(kinda) of them in most cities and it's getting out of hand even more after each year...

Lol yah those 18% are owners of Shoppers Drug Mart -you must be a pharmacist to buy a Shoppers- etc...

Realistically, a pharmacist in London, Ontario makes about $60 per hour and if you are one of those guys who roams around -more difficult usually requires some experience- they make about $75 in London, Ontario.

Full time position at $75 an hour is $144,000 after taxes. Not bad at all.

Let me remind you those roaming positions where you work at a different pharmacy everyday are hellish. You have to deal with hundreds of random people, deal with driving a lot -they aren't normally in the same town- and you end up in clinics no one else wants to work at.

Lucrative, yes... $500,000 I don't think so.

Edit: And when I said in London, I meant friends of mine who are pharmacists living in London but actually working in a smaller town outside of London. Most big cities are saturated and you won't find a position paying more than $50-55 an hour.

$500K? HA!

More like $80K average in Canada, with it going up to $110-120K in rural areas. Even SDM associates don't make that much; their salaries range from $115K (minimum, guaranteed) to $350K maximum.

Those who go above that are probably independent pharmacy owners. I have met someone who makes $500K owning several pharmacies. But it's getting harder and harder as SDM expands (think of it as the second wave of Wal-Mart), and with the new profession-destroying bill that the Ontario government is trying to pass.

please don't post if you don't have accurate information. both my parents are pharmacists who went to school here and practice here.

yeah for sure, if you hold academic positions, research plus do clinical work on the side, i'm sure you will be making lots of money. fact is, the MAJORITY of pharmacists do not do that.

My friends in Pharmacy told me the government is planning to pass a bill that will cut gov't reimbursements to independent pharmacies...so people in Pharm are freaking out a bit. Seriously though, pharmacy is a sweet job. No stress, very regular hours, decent job security, high pay, and physcially not as tiring since you're not performing any procedures. Plus, you don't graduate with a huge debt, don't need to purchase a clinic/practice, and have no overheads (assuming you don't own a store). If you get a BScPharm, you can graduate at 23 and start working. A great job in my opinion!

And dentists don't earn THAT much compared to pharmacists. I'm sure everyone knows a few that make 700k +, but the majority are in the 200-250k range. But if you specialize, then you blow pharmacists out of the water. The Ortho that I work for bills 12,000/ day and his overhead is less than 50% since he shares an office with another ortho and 2 paedos. I don't even want to talk about Oral surgeons. I had 3 wisdom teeth taken out a couple of months ago under local anaesthesia and paid $1890. It took the surgeon 25 mins, from the time that I sat down in the chair to the time I paid the receptionist.

Lol yea,i hope they won't pass some retarded bills/chart to screw up dentists...In the U.S. the famous health care reform from Obama wanted to make Pharmacists make the same income of the guy who flips burgers are McDonalds...(i know i exagerated a bit lol)But still,Pharmacists are not the good ol'money makers they were once.

They are also trying to modify the pay of Physicians,i know right, physicians, into a "Pay for performance" system,it has been contested a lot and i don't think it will be implemented, but if it does,i can see Medical Schools lose like 45% of their students.

only if 18% of Pharmacists in Quebec are not really pharmacists but successful business owners with pharmacy as a hobby ;)

Part of this is true, here in Quebec, pharmacists can open their own independent stores,so yea, there IS Pharmacists with like 15 years of experience making above 500k range running multiple stores,i never said every pharmacist make that income so stop freaking out guys...lol

100-200k/year is totally realist with the shortage going on...most people i know who graduated Pharm.D. signed like 60/hour contracts straight out...

I must agree that Dentists who specialize DO make a lot higher than Pharmacists in pretty much every ways.

I think why it's a big deal is you're saying 18% thats almost 1/5.... I hard think 1 out of every 5 Pharmacists are running multiple business etc...

I don't get it? So your orthodontist bills 12k a day... meaning about 6k income?

You do realize:

6,000 x 4 days (let's say he only works 4 days) = 24,000 x 4 weeks = 96,000

96,000 x 12 months = $1,150,000 before taxes?

How is that even possible?

That is steep.

I've heard of specialists making that BEFORE overhead and taxes.

Well I book his patients and print a copy of his billings everyday when I was working there. These numbers are not a reach for orthos! The other ortho I worked for billed about the same per day, but worked 3 days a week instead of 5. The first ortho chooses to work 5 days a week because he has a huge patient base (booked 3-4 months in advance for consults and bracket placements for new patients. Also he's pretty young, maybe early 30s?

Basically, he works 5 chairs at once in 30 min blocks. Usually I book 60-70 patients per day for him. I heard from one of his assistants that he used to see 90-100 patients / day when he first started, but has cut down since then. And the typical billing for each adjustment is 190-220$. (he charges a bit more than GPs since he is a specialist, around 7000 - 8000 per patient depending on the case).

My GP(family friend) billed 1.5 million last year with 2 hygienists working for him and no associates.........I'm sure it's not that big of a reach for specialists who charge 40% more.....
