Interested in Anesthesia

Hi!

 

I just finished first year med, and (although I know it's early), I know I want to do anesthesia. I've heard it's a competitive specialty... what are they looking for? I'd appreciate any advice.

The description was initially for Emerg I believe but it is definitely very helpful regardless of what specialty you'd like to pursue.

 

As far as I know Anesthesia is more popular than in previous years but is not on the same level of competitiveness as things like derm, optho, plastic surgery, etc. Things that will help your application are great reference letters in anesthesia electives, possible research, making contacts or even doing away electives at schools of your choice.
