This is my first post because I'm tired of hearing these questions from CEGEP students and I will share what I learned from my experience. Also, it is my last post since I don't like socalizing on the net.

There is one keything that you should learn. If you learn this, you will achieve wathever you want. Do what YOU feel confortable with. Do not go to a cegep for reputation. Do not go to an university for reputation. All this crc-average-high-ifg-better-most-best-reputation cegep is bull****. Do not take courses because people say its better for getting in (i.e. Microbio instead of Physic/Math integration). Trust me, I know ppl from the program and above years, they all have so diverse pathways. Do not volunteer if you dont like it. Do not shadow if its for the cv. Do not pretend to care about africa if you dont. Some doctors dont and make excellent clinicans. Please believe me. People will go to Marianopolis/Brebeuf for reputation because they take more Med students. It's a vicious cycle : The reason why more ppl get in from there is that more ppl aiming for med school go there. I was in your position and didnt lister to others telling me some of these things.

Oh and last thing. Don't ask how people get good R-scores. I will tell you that simply : work ****ing hard. No one is intelligent in our program. The only intelligence is the perseverance and the patience to sit on a damn table learning material 5 hours a day for a week. Everyone studies a lot. Some people pretend to be <intelligent> and only study a few hours for a final. It is not true.

So now shut it and go study. (I should too).

So you want to get in :

***Do what you want.***

1) Never listen to others's bull**** (except me in this post lol...)

2)Study 5 hrs a day 7 days a week (5hrs/24hrs youll have a lot of time for your <life> trust me)

3) Dont get in that voluntaring if you dont care

4) Dont pretend to care

5) Dont pretend that your motivations are more pure than the others

6) Dont think its getting better after cegep

7) Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy your time and your studies. If its a pain, its gonna last 10 years and depression will hit you.

The advice was maybe a little rough around the edges and you were at risk of slipping off your soap box and hurting yourself :D but it was good advice. I will put it into two words: be authentic.

Hey guys, I agree with you both. :P And remember, Coach, this was a first post ever. Listen2me, remember, he is our Coach, so he says "listen 2 me"! :P

I listen to you both. :D

yup, i keep telling this to my friends too.. They always ask me Oh you want to become a doctor? THEN you must take COURSES like CHEM BIO MATH PHYSICS Blah blah... Im doing a Psychology major because i like that... i hate when they say those things. I dont need to take chemistry bio math all my life. OF course i like chem and bio, but its not like i have to do a major in them... and alot of people believe here at University of Toronto that doing a "life science" degree will get you into med school, when that is completely BS. i wish i could show them this thread. Honestly no one could have said this better. If you don't care why do it?

Not sure what year you are in but those seem to me the sentiments of froshies or ignorant 2nd years. I think Barrett did a quite interesting thing in the first class of first year in biology asking the entire convocation hall how many would like to pursue medicine. When 1,000+ people raise their hands you know that for most the thoughts/'dreams' will fade with time (some slower and some quicker).

These sentiments are pretty much non-existent by 3rd and 4th year since reasonable people generally have a feel for if they still have a shot at med or not.

Gotta love Barrett. Dr. Baker in bch told us the other day in a nice way, you probably won't get into med so you might as well do a bch specialist lol.

Other than that...do whatever you want! and just have fun, but be on top of ****.

I HATE it when people lie about how much they study. Why are they trying to look "cool"?! They just look like liars.

Actually I have to disagree with that... I do study for exams only for a cpl hours before, and not nearly as much as the average people in my class and DEFINATELY not nearly as much as the people I know who got accepted in medicine. There is no way I study 5h a day, actually more like 5h a week unless there is a lot of exams in the same week then it's more.

Still, I got a really good R-Score and got accepted in 3 unis. I do agree that most people who get accepted studied their ass off to death, but there is some exception.

As arrogant as it might sound, I can't explain it except that it's just that I seem to understand concepts (catch the tricks I guess) quickly, and my memory seems to be really good as I remember things without having to read them again and again. I am quite anonymous on this forum and really have no reason to lie like this so don't think I spend my day pretending to be intelligent on the internet, it's an honest post.

Still, hard work is definately important, but being smart to a certain point is a requirement. Some people, no matter how much work to put into it, wouldn't be able to reach those grades and get in.

I disagree with the studying. You DO NOT study 5 hours a day 7 days I week. I study 1 hour daily and do fine - and if your going to call me a liar, then fine be ignorant. Spending time with friends, volunteering at somewhere that you like, doing a few sports of leisure and picking up a few hobbies are much more important than study study study. I don't understand why you need to sound so condescending with your post. It doesn't help you get your point across.

I agree Marianopolis and Brebuf is over rated and everyone should pick a CEGEP based on where they live and the best environment they learn in.

I never meant to sound condescending but I think you sould read the post.

The title of the post is : How to get in 100% under McGill Medical School.

These are my advices that I consider will get you in McGill Medical School at 100%.

I never mentionned the 3 francophone schools.

I never said you had to study 5 hours a day.

I said that studying 5 hours a day will get you in 100%.

If you study 60 minutes per day, you might get in.

I simply do not believe that studying 60 minutes a day will get you in 100%.

Again, 100% doesn't exist.

But hey, these are opinions, not facts.

Good Luck to all.

What is said is definitely true, but don't discourage people to do volunteering! You might not like it right off the bat, but just like studying, you see the long term impact it has, on you and your community, and you can begin to like it. Not everyone was born a doctor, but your "parcours" definitely help you toward that direction.

Also, let's please not talk-s*** about Marianopolis or Brebeuf. I loved my experience at Mariano so far, the people there are friendly and helpful, and it's a perfect environment if you want to learn a lot. Exceptions to the rule are rare and, well... exceptions ;)

And lastly, hours of studying are a very poor way to measure academic efforts, as some people are more efficient than others. Even with the same person, a 1 intense hour can be way more productive than 5 hours of book grinding! Just study until you master the material and exams should be a breeze :)

But, I must say it's a very bold post that says out loud what many (including myself) dare not. Maybe a little friendlier tone would help? :D

Yea I disagree with the whole "people who say they only study a few hours are liars" bit because I have always studied maybe 30% of the time most of my colleagues had for the same exams..and I still did better than most people. People have different abilities...some people just inherently understand certain subject matter more than others. Some people are capable of performing better under stress. In fact some people perform better under stress/limited time than if they studied for a few hours everyday. Not to say that studying all the time is necessarily bad, but every person is different. If you need to study 4 hours a day to do well then so be it. If you only need to study a day or 2 before the exam and do well then great. I do agree though that there are some people who obviously lie about how much they study (i.e. it is obvious their face is buried in books 24/7 but then they try to say they only studied the night before...and since I am the type to study the night before it is easy to tell apart the people who do the same from those that do not).

And some people are more naturally intelligent that others. I cannot even recall how many people I know have to struggle to even get close to the grades I am able to maintain with minimal effort/horrible procrastination. That is not to say that it matters...in the end, if you are perseverent and work hard, it really does not matter...but what you must do to get into med may differ (i.e. some people have to work much harder to get in versus others).

Well, studying less and getting more than other students doesn't make you more intelligent,in fact, getting good grades in CEGEP is more about time management and self-esteem than just study 1 hour per day to get 35 of R-Score.If you understand the field of study more than others, you will end up studying less,it's all about your need of learning if you know what i mean.

Still, you made a great point, perseverance and kownledge are the key to success.

Scrolling the forums for inappropriate threads to delete, I saw that you stated in another post that you were still a high school student, getting ready to start Cegep. Even though what you say applies in many circumstances, and I'm sure that it was to help people out and in good faith, I wanted to point out that you are giving out advice on how to gain admission through med school from Cegep without even having done 1 hour of cegep courses yet. Do what you will with this advice, but you should always refrain from speaking about things you know nothing of. This will serve you greatly in med school later on, as well as many aspects in life.

Sorry, but couldn't help from commenting on your post. Now, back to my moderating duties...

Oh and here are two quotes that nicely sums up some of the OP's points:

"Wherever you go, go with all your heart"

"Find something you love to do and you'll never have to work a day in your life"
