Which is easier overall? If you had to choose, which option would you pick.

1) University of Toronto St.George

CHM138H1 3 credit course

CHM247H2 3 credit course

PHYS 131 H1 3 credit course

OR

2) York University

CHEM 2020 6 credit course

PHYS 1410 6 credit course

How is PHYS 1410? Is it manageable to take PHYS 1410 and CHEM 2020 for the summer? Or would utsg be a better choice?

York U Lions Coach Charged with Child Luring

Posted By: Suzette Francis sfrancis@astral.com · 2/22/2013 10:10:00 AM

A recruiter and running back coach with the York Lions Football team has been arrested and charged in connection with a child luring investigation.

Police say they arrested a man in connection with the investigation on Thursday.

Police say between December 2012 and February 2013, the accused engaged a 16-year-old boy through cell phone and internet chats.

During their conversations, the victim sent images of himself to the accused using his cell phone.

Daniel Younis, 24, of Toronto, has been charged with:

1) Luring a Child Under 18

2) Attempt Make Child Pornography

He* is scheduled to make a court appearance on Friday.

Police believe there may be more victims.

Meanwhile York University has issued a statement that they have been made aware of the investigation and are deeply disturbed by the allegations.

The university says they have suspended their relationship with Younis and are cooperating with police.

Just curious, how did they find out? lol

If the UTSG one is during the year, then take that, otherwise you can't do both CHEM 2020 and PHYS 1410 at the same time during the summer and expect to get a good mark in both. Why are you taking PHYS 1410 by the way?

Also, can anyone tell me the fastest/easiest way to fulfill my gen ed requirements for Bio?

Go to UTSG. No point in taking 3 more credits of physics and risking your gpa unless you're good at physics and are confident you'll get an A (even then its a risk).

I'm planning to take these courses over the summer. Is UTSG doable during the summer first term with CHM138 & PHYS 131 ?

I'm from McMaster and PHYS 1410 (6 credit) is the only course offered in the summer that's equivalent to our PHYSICS 1B03 (3 credit).

^^^ exactly!

I would NEVER want my child going to York and it has nothing to do with the academic qualities of york

I think the only news coming out of york that could surprise me at this point is "Attempted ethnic genocide at York University"

Actually I might believe that one too, but at least I'll be able to tell people I come from the hood and they better not mess with me forever

Do you recommend taking summer orgonic chemistry here?

You have to stop spamming these boards to gain post count. You clearly questioned and ridiculed another member of his logic behind taking organic in the summer in another thread, yet here you are asking it yourself. Regardless if your post count exceeds all of premed101 community members' combined in the coming months, and regardless of how much you say you "contribute" to premed101, no one will ever take what you say seriously.

LOL saw the test marks...

first thought: pm101's gonna be exploding tonight

Yeah, test 1 marks were terrible! Hopefully test 2 will be a bit easier. But does anyone know if the bio department regulates the class averages at the end of the term?

I keep hearing from friends that the registrar will adjust marks at the end if the class average for genetics is too low. Can anyone clarify?

Regards

They'll make him curve it, especially being a new prof he's gonna have no leverage with the department.

Don't forget though, he's basically giving you 15% for free (10% going to tutorial+ doing assignment and 5% clickers) so you might as well count that as a 15% midterm with a class average of 100%, which neutralizes the midterm to 74%. Assuming he'll want to keep the final average at 65%, he'll have to make the rest of the class have a 60 average so what I'm saying is don't expect any change lol

Man, this class is the only class I'm worried about this semester. It's got me thinking of dropping the course...but if I do, I'll only have 27 credits:/ What do you think good idea? bad idea?

I got people telling me to just get through the course, but I'm really catering my GPA to getting into professional school in my 3rd year. I hope the course doesn't bring me down lol

  • 2 weeks later...

To that definition of 'Yorked' posted a while back, you can't beat my previous uni. They didn't get my acceptance on OUAC so they cancelled my offer, denied me rez because of that, and initially gave me an F in my chem course because the lab coordinator forgot to submit my lab component.

I actually really like York. The buildings are relatively new, it's well serviced by the TTC and besides the ditzes who oogle girls all day while complaining about their marks, the people are nice. I don't know if I'm making a mistake or not, but I'm not planning on transferring to U of T. :)

I'm trying to figure out which third year bio courses to take. Can anyone give me feedback on the courses listed below (difficulty, professors you had it with, etc)?

3010 - Adv Biochemistry

3060 - Animal Phys I

3070 - Animal Phys II

3110 - Mol Bio I

3130 - Mol Bio II

3120 - Immuno

3150 - Microbio

I plan on taking all of these in third year, would that be a good idea in terms of work load? Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey I took Phys 1410 last summer and I noticed the same prof is teaching it this summer as well. The course was easy to follow along and do well in as long as you showed up to every class and paid attention. There are two assignments and a quiz every week and the quizzes are based on the professors notes from classes. He writes out on the chalkboard so that's quite helpful. By the end of the course you've done about 20 assignments, 10 quizzes, and 10 labs, so you have several chances to improve your grade. He also drops your lowest assignment and quiz mark. However keep in mind there is some calculus involved.

From what I can see, minus the animal phys, most people (especially biomed folks) take that combination of courses in third year (I guess most people don't take animal phys, because they didn't take animals in second year).

I haven't taken these, so I don't know for sure, but apparently molec 1 is exactly what you would expect, and molec 2 is somewhat harder (similar to BIOL 2020 vs BIOL 2021, or human phys 1 vs human phys 2).

I am not sure if I want to take histology in my fourth year or not. If not, I am saving micro for year 4. Reason being is that it's a 4 credit course, and that helps make up for your thesis course being only 8 credits and not 9. I don't know what administration's logic is behind this 8 credit nonsense (instead of making it 9 credits); do they really think a thesis is less work/easier than most introductory humanities courses (which are usually 9 credits)? My hypothesis is that, they force you to take on 32 credits (i.e. 11 courses throughout the year instead of 10), so they can squeeze every penny out of you before you leave.

Also, anyone taking the advanced lab methods course in 3rd year? 2070 went well, and if that's any indication, the lab course may not be too bad.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, immuno prof is super nice, but not sure how hard her stuff is.

EDIT 2: If you plan on taking a thesis, don't forget to enroll into the 2 credit current topics course. From what I hear if you are good are presentations you usually do well in the class (then again, how many people are truly good at presentations...lol).

I made the original post from a friend's account. Thought i'd make my own account to reply back.

I've heard some pretty bad things about the molecular bios, someone has told me to only take it if i absolutely need it. But I had people tell me the same about Animals and it was not bad at all.

Thanks for the advice though and reminding me about the current topics course completely forgot I needed that! And have you heard anything about the thesis? I've had some older student tell me you're guaranteed an A as long as you work effectively and get along with your supervisor.

Well remember, not taking molc = not taking a lot of fourth year stuff (they are prereqs for a lot of stuff, so remember to take that into account).

I hear mixed things about the thesis, everyone seems to have very different experiences with it. You would assume that the prof would just give you an A if not A+ once you are done (assuming you didn't break any expensive equipment or something like that during your stay, lol), but I also here that the marking is tougher than it seems (you do need to present/defend your thesis to a comity and I believe they are involving in the marking process). I heard about someone who won an award for having one of the top 6 thesis' at York and only ended up with an A (you would think someone in the top 6 would easily end with an A+)! That made me wonder, assuming that there would be around 100 thesis students (fair estimate I suppose considering the size of our current second year classes) and assuming this guy is at the bottom of the 6 positions, that means AT MOST only 5 people out of 100 got an A+...

Let's also not forget the alternate to the 8 credit thesis, which is the 3 credit written thesis; it seems like it is a lot less work, but considering that it is just an essay, it does not seem as much fun as working in a lab, lol.

Counting up your credits (including current topics), you have 26 credits. If you take "Advanced Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Laboratory" you round that to 30 credits. If you are not into labs lol, and you still need some gen-eds I would say go for FILM 1701, its online and requires minimal work (hard to get an A+, but an A is all but guaranteed). But FILM is only 3 credits, so you would need one more class. Maybe others on here can make a few suggestions.
