"Horizontal" UofT Family Medicine rotation schedule

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at UofT's Family Medicine site schedules, and noticed that only Markham-Stouffville has a "horizontal" schedule http://www.dfcm.utoronto.ca/Assets/DFCM+Digital+Assets/Learners/Markham+Stouffville+Two+year+outline+2011.pdf

.. while the other sites don't (see the rest of the sites at http://www.dfcm.utoronto.ca/prospectivelearners/prosres/teachingsites.htm). Horizontal at Markham-Stouffville meaning you get 3.5 days of family medicine clinic per week .. it's not like you only get a 2-4month intensive family medicine block per year like the other sites.

My question is, is there that much of an advantage of having this horizontal schedule?

almost every FM program across the country is becoming "horizontal" to some extent.

The key is to have continuity of care, so you can follow patients over the 2 years.

Many programs still do regular blocks, but allow for one half-day (or more) per week of FM office visits so you can book your regular patients.

To me, this is sufficient.

If you like the idea of doing a day of surgery, a day of psych, etc, then you might prefer the more traditional horizontal programs, but the main complaint from residents was that always doing something different means always having to read and never really feeling comfortable in any given specialty.
