Say that you will wash test tubes, or clean equipment for free. This will get you foot in the door for research positions there during your undergrad which will be very beneficial when it comes to applying to med-schools. Aim for volunteer positions where you will have the opportunity to carry out protocols, at least. Volunteering to do menial work is not worth your time. Bede Posted January 22, 2014 Report Share Posted January 22, 2014 Danny, Great to see your enthusiasm. I think the best way is think about what you want to do and email a couple profs in that field. Understand their work and ask for a tour of their facilities. Ask good questions, show your enthusiasm. Ask what it would take to volunteer in their lab. Don't ask to wash dishes. A certain amount of maturity is needed to do this kind of work. We recently had a HS student come to our lab meeting. At the end of the lab meeting he asked if all meetings were this long (1hr). He then told us that an hour is way too long and way too boring. He was kind of right- lab meetings are boring, but you can get away with saying that as a post doc, not as a HS student.
