Good Resources To Know More About Medical Field

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

As I am getting ready for application, I am realising that I lack a bit of knowledge about our health care system, the latest technologies, the ethical debates, etc.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good journal/website/app to read about the medical field, and that also has critiques in it (not just the plain info). I've tried Flipboard, but I was surprisingly dissapointed (or maybe am I simply not using it correctly).

Thank you for you help!

Florence

Florence,

This is the only ethics resource you need: http://www.cmaj.ca/site/misc/bioethics_e.xhtml

I say this as someone who has helped out with med admissions a few times... It is from a Canadian prospective and from an authoritative source the CMAJ.

Want to learn about healthcare? Even better, want to do it while you drive or ride the bus etc.? Listen to this CBC radioshow: White coat black art (http://www.cbc.ca/whitecoat/episode/)  The host is an ER doc from Toronto. A good listen. As an aside, the host gave a good TED talk. Not directly related to your original questions, but worth a watch. It's at: https://www.ted.com/talks/brian_goldman_doctors_make_mistakes_can_we_talk_about_that

There you have it. Some good resources and all free. How awesome is that? ;)

Now risking looking like a Goldman fanatic, I also suggest reading The Night Shift (http://www.amazon.ca/Night-Shift-Dr-Brian-Goldman/dp/1554683920/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1409782223&sr=1-3&keywords=night+shift) Not essential, but a good, easy and fun read which will teach you about healthcare as well. As someone who does night shifts, I can say this book captures the feel and the issues pretty accurately. Might be the next best thing to shadowing an ER doc...
