Well I thought since the application for PT opened on November 15, there might be a few of us with some questions. Post them here!

I have one question regarding references. It says on the website that we have to submit THREE reference letters. That means it's just the two academic letters + the Practical Experience form right? I was a little confused with the information on the website since it says we have to submit three letters electronically but the form that they gave us has to be mailed directly to UBC...I just wanted to make sure! Thank you in advance to anyone who could answer my question!

I've run into the same issue. The way I understood the system is that we enter our academic references into the application system, which will then automatically e-mail our references with a form to fill out. With regards to our practical experience referee, we'd simply print off the form on the MPT admissions page, pass that along, and have them mail it in to the faculty once completed.

 

At the top of the page, it does say that the referees we would be entering are to comment on our academic abilities/qualifications (or something like that). Below it, there is a link for a copy of the document as an alternative to an electronic submission, and it appears to be an academic reference form ONLY.

 

I've e-mailed in regarding this since it's not possible to move on with the application if you leave the third referee field blank. I'm tempted to say either to put N/A or just submit your practical referee information, but I suppose this application probably isn't something you want have any guess work with.

 

I will post here when I have an answer.

I'm assuming they're being bombarded by emails so they can't reply in a timely manner. For the academic references, do we ask them to submit the form that is provided (https://www.grad.ubc.ca/forms/reference-letter-report-applicant-admission-graduate-studies) AND a seperate letter? Or just one (does not matter which one)?

As far as I am aware, it is just one or the other. Your academic referees will be sent a "similar" form to the one you have posted via e-mail once your application is submitted. From what I've heard, the referees always have the alternative to submit a letter of reference should they wish to.

I asked a similar question earlier and as far as I understand it, the practical experience form IS the reference letter. That part was really confusing to me and I emailed Sheila but she never replied me. I have already submitted my application and from the application letter that they sent me, we only need to submit two reference letters/forms from your academic references and then the practical experience form from your third reference. When you input your reference information, just exclude the email from your practical experience referee.

I had another question, I haven't started my online application yet (because I won't be receiving my grade for a class until the end of december, so I figured I should wait until beginning of december to start).

BUT, my question has to do with the essay component (applicant statement / statement of interest)

I have started writing an essay based on the questions asked on the graduate program website.

I was just confirming that there IS a statement of intent letter / applicant statement.

I have read on the graduate application that there may be an applicant statement depending on the program you apply for. Also, I have heard from previous applicants that there was an essay component. However, I have talked to a couple of people and they claim that there wasn't an essay component to fill out.
 

 

 

Do you mind clearing this up for me?

Hello kdhyun!

 

There isn't an essay component to the application. All you need to do is fill out the online app and upload your prereq form + other documents (like if you're a BC resident, you'll have to provide the carecard etc.) once you submit the application, an email will be sent to your academic referees for them to complete the reference form.

 

So yeah, I don't think there's an essay component...there was one part where we had to list and briefly describe the nature of our practical experience and that's about it...no essay involved! It also doesn't say on the "completing your application" tab on the MPT UBC website that it has an essay component.

Does any one know the the average GPA cut off for the past few years?

I read on the FAQ page that the interview cutoff was between 78-83% (Which I feel is lower than what I thought it would be).

 

But does anyone know what the GPA was for people who got accepted in 2011, 12, 13, 14?

 

 

ALSO.. some depressing news... I heard from a friend of a friend who is on the admission board that people who generally apply for medschool also apply to UBC PT/OT as a back up. SO.. looks like we are also competing against med school applicants.

Anyone using the combination of UBC's courses of KIN 190 and 191 to satisfy 3 credits of anatomy and 3 credits of physiology? Im wondering how we would place this on the official prerequisite form that we have to submit.

Do you put "190/191" in a single line ( thus in one line in each of the anat and physiology sections) and just average the two marks for the "final grade" section for each line? Thanks!

I applied last year with an average around 84% (as best as I could calculate) and was waitlisted for an interview, so that gives some indication of where the cut off was.  I say about 84% because I had some courses converted from letter grades and I'm not exactly sure what percentage marks were assigned to them by UBC.

I attended McGill University earning a BSc. Anatomy and Cell Biology and am using these marks to apply to UBC PT. For my last 30 credits of 300/400 level classes I will have 1 A, 8 A- and 1 B+. For my pre requisites I will have 2A, 2A- and 1 B+. I have no idea how to convert this into percentages as if I use the high end of my A-s (84.45%) I feel like I have a decent shot at an interview, whereas if I use the low end (80%) I am fairly confident that I don't have a shot. In any case, my marks aren't really what I am counting on to get me into the program despite realizing that this probably has the most weight.

 

I have over 1000 hours working at the McGill Sports Medicine Clinic and another 4000 working at Sports Medicine Specialists in Toronto. Additionally, I was the student therapist for both the McGill Men's Soccer and Men's Rugby team in my final year. I also did research with a McGill physio professor on stroke patient rehabilitation. I currently work in a clinic and volunteer at a kids rehab hospital. All of this is shown in my academic reference letters and experience letters...but to what avail? Does anyone know if they even care about this stuff (I sure hope they do). 

 

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

What do you do if you took a prerequisite course in the winter semester and do NOT have a grade yet? I am a UBC student so I do not have to upload my transcript and I should be expecting a grade before the end of December. 

 

Should I wait till my final grade is out prior to submitting this form?

That is the golden question, and you won't receive an answer to that unless you know someone who is or has been on the board REALLY well. On the website it does say that experience is taken into consideration, but the whole "minimum of 70 hours" seems like more of a box to check off to me. My guess is GPA + Interview are the most important factors, with experience having a small capability to boost your rank. It's pure speculation, so don't lose any sleep over it.

I am in the same boat as you (Kin 375, maybe?). The mark is up now... But in the event that it's not 375 you're talking about, yes, you MUST wait. I asked this and they said they would not accept the application if you indicate the course as in-progress and scheduled to be completed by Dec 31st.

 

I'm actually pretty peeved at the whole thing because I was just able to submit my application tonight. As I e-mailed one of my references to let them know they will be receiving access to the form, I got an automated reply, "Thank you for your e-mail... I will be away until Jan 5th and will not be checking my e-mail prior to then". So pretty much the e-mail from MPT will get lost amongst the thousands of other e-mails he's likely to receive over the next couple weeks.

 

Thanks UBC for having such a horrible, horrible (and ugly) application system.

So I've submitted my application on Dec 28th, does anyone know when I should be expecting my application status to start changing to "Received" and green. All these RED fonts are making me a little anxious.

 

Also, what is academic history checklist. Am i suppose to do something for that section?

My status changed from mostly red to all green on Friday the 8th so hopefully yours will change soon as well!

As for the academic section I didn't do anything extra for that, I'm assuming that they confirm your history with the transcripts you uploaded or with the academic history info on the online application.
