Q&a With Mcgill Med Ambassadors

Recommended Posts

For everybody who received their offer of admission: congratulations! Your hard work has finally paid off!

This is the official fb group for McGill Med Class of 2019: https://www.facebook.com/groups/803826626398728/

Those who are waitlisted: please do not lose hope! We know for a fact that the waitlist does move - applicants, for many different reasons (admission to another med school, location of the city, family and friends, etc), can choose to decline an offer of admission, and the waitlist stays active until very late in August, very likely until right before the beginning of orientation.

If you have been refused, we would like to say that it does not necessarily mean that you were any less qualified. Med school admissions, along with the MMIs, sometimes simply do not work out in our favor, and many of our friends have had to apply more than once before getting in. If medicine is what you want to do, we urge you to reconsider your application and to re-apply in the following years.

Thank you all very much for considering McGill - best of luck in the future!

Thanks. Would you know when waitlisted candidates will hear about their position on the list?

First off, good job for getting on the waitlist - it moves around every year, so there's definitely still a chance of getting an acceptance!

We have been informed that the ranking will only be released in May since there are still some ongoing interviews for a handful of candidates in April.

We appreciate that this must be a frustrating position to be in. The release of rankings is a new decision for this year (we're trying it out to see how it works out since rankings have never been released before), and as such, many people did not foresee this possible delay. Again, please keep in mind that the waitlist does move - you have gotten this far, don't lose hope!

Does this also apply for the OOP applicants?

Only international and IP applicants should expect to receive their rankings after interviews have been completed in May 2015.

OOP, NTP and IMG waitlist rankings are now being entered - keep on checking your Minerva account if you haven't gotten anything yet.

Good luck!

Do you know if they filled all 4 international spots already, and whether the upcoming interviewees are just interviewing for WL positions at this point?

We do not have much info about this, so your best bet would be ask the adcom directly. However, chances are that the upcoming interviewees will be interviewing for WL positions since that would explain why they have yet to release the WL rankings for IP and international applicants. Hope it answers your question!

Maybe the adcom left a few spots open, and the WL for IP is not released yet since those who will be interviewed in April (including myself) could either:

a.) get one or more of those spots

b.) get on the WL

c.) get refused.

From that moment a final WL with final rankings would be available, and the top candidates of the WL would fill the remaining few spots left while the rest of the WL would wait as usual? I emailed adcom, hoping for an answer soon

Even though i'm extremely happy to get an interview in April, getting interviewed with a shot for the WL only would be quite less exciting haha

I'm sure they left IP spots open (depending on how many April interview applicants they have), but for internationals it's different because we're all competing for only 4 seats. I wouldn't be surprised if the late interviewees for our category were only interviewing for WL.

Not too sure to understand your question, but the point of not releasing the IP WL right away is because if candidates interviewing in April "outperform" (in a way) candidates who are already on the WL, the late interviewing candidates can definitely be bumped up to the top of the WL. Seeing that there may already be candidates who are refusing their spots at McGill even at this very moment, this would also free up spots, which is why the candidates that are interviewing in April may directly receive an offer of acceptance when the decisions will be released in May (potential date).

Again, just our opinion - independent from the admission committee's.

But say, hypothetically, no spots were refused up until the April interviews and that McGill had also filled up all of the available IP spots with this round of invitations. That would mean that the people interviewing would not have an equal chance at getting a spot at McGill, regardless of how they performed at the MMI. Wouldn't it make more sense/be fairer to hold off on giving out 5-6 IP spots, interview everyone in April, re-order the list, and then give those 5-6 vacant spots to the top candidates (regardless of when they interviewed) and let the rest remain as the official waitlist?

Also they haven't released any admission numbers yet, which makes me think they definitely expect things to move. Could be just the wait list, but I doubt it. I agree with dishevelled that this makes the most sense.

Should someone who was waitlisted for an interview necessarily be on equal footing as someone who wasn't?

According to McGill's selection process (http://www.mcgill.ca/medadmissions/applying/selection-process), there is no reference of difference between how they evaluate those who were offered interview outright and those who were waitlisted.  The post-interview decision doesn't seem to depend on pre-interview status at all.  I don't know if it's "necessary", but why should the rank 201 applicant who was waitlisted be looked at differently than the rank 200 applicant when the rank 200 applicant had a good a chance as the rank 1 applicant going in to the interview? Put it in another context, should the med student who got in off the waitlist not be graded in the same way as the student who was not waitlisted? An interview is an interview, and we all go in there with a clean slate.

This interview waitlist thing makes all those involved stressed and confused, but since McGill hasn't finalized their rankings then at least the April interviewees aren't just fighting to be appended to the end of the wait list.

Just my two-cents on the subject :)

So do university level in province, NTP in province and CEGEP (which all fit under MED-P right?) have different wait lists, or do they all compete under the IP category?

Each has its own separate WL.

Only students coming from the CEGEP or the French baccalauréat with the required pre-requisite courses are eligible for Med-P.

Why does McGill hold 2 round of interviews ?

It is not exactly seen as 2 rounds of interviews. McGill wishes to give an interviewing opportunity to as many candidates as it can. There happens to be such an opportunity in April to interview candidates for the Med-P program, and thus, the faculty does allocate at times some the spots to candidates that were on the WL for interviews in February (for the MDCM program).
