I Am Going To Attend U Of T Life Sci. Should I Take Chm138H1 And 139 Or Should I Take Chm151Y1?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm graduating HS and going to UT Life Science. The plan is to go to an American medical school with financial aid, which I have been looking up the past few days. All the pre-med requirements seem to be laboratory based for the US meds.

CHM138+139 and CHM151 both seem to have labs. But I heard CHM151 is more laboratory oriented. What should I take?

And also I found out that the US meds want math and physics. I am going to apply for the Human Biology Global Health Specialist program in the second year, which means I can take either the math combination or the physics combination in the first year. (Although I heard Prof Lam is easier to get marks :)

For anyone who attended U of T or are attending Life Science, any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

I don't know anything about UofT courses, so I cant help you there. But I'm wondering, why plan to go to the US from the get-go? It's substantially more expensive down there. Unless there are some mitigating factors, I would try to aim for Canadian schools and only apply to US in case things don't work out in Canada. I have some Canadian friends who are dual citizens, with entire families living in the US, but they decided to stay in Canada for med just because of the lower tuitions. This is just my general advice.

I took CHM151 instead of 138+139 and I would make the same choice if I were to do it over again. The profs for CHM151 was so much better to those teaching 138+139. The labs for CHM151 were much more intense than for 138+139 though. I had to do weekly full lab reports that were 8 pages long, but CHM138+139 do them bi-weekly, and I think they might not even have been full lab reports (I may be confusing 138/139 with another chem on the point on full lab reports though). One key difference between the two is that CHM151 is a full year general chemistry course whereas 138 and 139 is half organic and half general chemistry. Most US schools require you to have 1 year of general chem and/or one year of organic chem. This means, if you were to take CHM151, you'll need to take two more organics after that, likely 247 and something else. If you were to take CHM138+139, you'll need to take another organic (247) and another general chem SOMEWHERE ELSE because UTSG doesn't offer it.

About the Math vs physics, I would recommend taking math in first year then physics in second year because I personally thought the math was relatively easier.

Briefly, CHM151 is more involved but if you put in the work is the better bet for actually learning and doing well. I was not aware of this at the time and to fulfill my prereqs after completing CHM138/139, did CHM247 (organic) and CHM238Y (year long inorganic for chem specialists...actually ended up being my best mark). Can't do CHM220 due to lack of lab. Or you can pick up a half semester general/inorganic elsewhere as the above poster alluded to.

Take note, this is several years after the fact for me now. Best of luck.
