jesk
Can anyone help me to figure out if Ottawa already has the WGPA cut-off or not for this application cycle? On their web site, it says: Candidates who meet the required minimum average set for their category will see their application advance in the section process and those who do not meet the minimum cut-off will not advance further. The minimum WGPA cut-offs are determined by the quantity and the quality of the applications that we receive(https://med.uottawa.ca/undergraduate/admissions/application-process/excellence-marks). I assume that they don't have "the quantity and the quality of the application that we receive" yet for this cycle, why do many people say WGPA cut-off is 3.85 for Ontario residents? I am confused. Belle_MD
From what I've seen the cut offs haven't changed much over the years but you can always ask admissions
IMislove
People say 3.85 because you can email them, and they have given that answer. I don't really see it changing, it will be interesting to see what CASPer does to the average gpa of interviews though.

He is 20 feet away at the moment doing an admissions talk. Interestingly CASPER isn't evaluated by the Ottawa medical school. There is an outside agency that does it. Including the French version. rmorelan
interview with a 4th med student, facility member and committee member that is usually another doctor. 40 minutes assessing a list of character traits - MMI in one station as they put it. rmorelan
If you do the French CASPER for Ottawa not surprisingly you need to do it again in English if you want to apply to Mac. 1/2 of the people that apply make the GPA cut off. They don't advertise the cut off but you can get it by calling in. that seems odd but ok
rmorelan
Currently class is 55% male actually - last year was the reverse. Probably random effects. Only 2% of applicants are over 30. Most are 20-25 - 95%
rmorelan
no way to switch from the french stream to the english stream. If you get into trouble in the French program you can be asked to lose your current year - go learn French - and then come back the following year. Or drop out completely and then you can reapply into the English stream.
rmorelan
they want to assess your ability to do all the ECs while doing your GPA - one of the reasons they don't count the grad courses etc.

rmorelan
Oh the GPA requirement for the english stream is definitely the same for everyone in Ontario now.
IMislove
Look at rmorelan go xD. How do you think CASPer is going to be affected now that a third party is marking it? I wonder what this means for Mac as they've been using med students and other docs/maybe community members to do it. Just another variable in the black box that is CASPer
aravar
Thanks for the info rmorelan! Out of curiosity, any idea why only 2% of the class is over 30? Does it simply correspond to the approx % of over 30 applicants?

Does it simply correspond to the approx % of over 30 applicants? I think so - there are just fewer above 30 applicants. It is just a proportionally rarer thing. Just another variable in the black box that is CASPer I think it is a bit of a new test personally - now to apply to the french stream you have actually answer questions QUICKLY and LOGICALLY in french. You cannot just speak it and kind of squeeze by. CASPER on top of everything else is now also a french language test in effect.

nelsojc
the wGPA cutoff is set each year based on the applicant pool...thus the cutoffs are not set until later but the Ontario cutoff has pretty much always been 3.
RedLily
I emailed admissions about the wGPA for this cycle and got this back: The WGPA cut-off for residents from the province of Ontario (including the Ottawa and Outaouais-Québec regions) – English program is 3.85/4.

Prothrombin
I emailed admissions about the wGPA for this cycle and got this back: The WGPA cut-off for residents from the province of Ontario (including the Ottawa and Outaouais-Québec regions) – English program is 3.85/4.00 I thought the WGPA for Ottawa area residents was 3.70. It was always lower than Ontario residents, but did that change it? EDIT: WOW they did change the WGPA cutoffs so Ottawa residents no longers have a lower cut off. Not that it really matters because i've never heard of a student with a 3.70 GPA get into the program, but thats still a bit disappointing. Savac
It probably ties back to meeting community needs. If they feel that they no longer need to increase the number of doctors in the area, then it would make sense. Either that or they found that people were no more likely to return for their eventual practice.
