Family Medicine - Emergency Medicine Match 2016 Interview Invites

Recommended Posts

Probably just one school though (?) - I mean when you take ALL the spots at all the schools for whatever that was there is a lot more than 3 I bet :)

Yeah, the surgical programs interview 40 for 3 spots because they know all those applicants are also applying to most other programs around the country - they often have to interview that many to guarantee they'll fill their spots with desirable candidates. The FM/EM programs can interview fewer applicants because they only need to interview that many to fill. FM/EM matches seems to be a lot more regional - applicants tend to match to their first choice program or not at all, with less than 20% landing in a 2nd or lower choice program. In a strange way, the lower interviewee-to-spot ratio in FM/EM actually reflects higher competition when compared to (most) surgical specialties.

Really? Which specialty was this? That's quite the competition....

Two schools for 2 different specialties, I interviewed at both (did not apply at any other schools for these specialties) and landed 1 of the 3 spots. I imagine that all interviewees were qualified and suppose that it came down to the interview. Many who had their hearts set on these specialties ended up doing family.

There is no point to ranking programs that did not invite you for an interview.

Focus on the programs that invited you for interviews and ranked them according to your preference :)

Good luck!

Hi there

Looking for advice on how to rank. Is there any point to ranking programs that did not invite you for an interview?

Gonna disagree with this. Rank according to where you want to go. Very unlikely that you do match to non interview programs but not impossible.

There's nothing to lose by ranking programs that didn't interview you - the match algorithm is very flexible in that regard. There's not much to gain though. Programs are competitive enough that any program who might rank you would invite you for an interview, and they'll have more than enough interviewed candidates to fill their spots.

only drawback is the small cost involved

the main point here though is very valid and important - the optimal way to play the carms game is to rank your choices in the order of preference absolutely regardless of how likely you think you will match there. That is not an opinion - it is something that can actually be proven with the math underlying the carms algorithm. You have to love game theory :)
