Regrets

Date Stamp: 28/01/2016 - 10:57 AM
Location: IP, OOO
Stream: English
wGPA: 3.89
Current year: 2nd Year MSc
ECs: Average, couldn't include a lot of my activities in top 3 because I completed them after undergrad.

CASPer: Probably not well at all - who knows really. Didn't get an invite to Mac either, but that's hardly an indication because cGPA and Verbal were on the low side.

& I also got the comment about possibly being contacted if there are vacancies...

Honestly, was expecting this from Ottawa with 99% confidence. Thought I'd give it a try for the heck of it, would have been a great surprise!

Decision: Invite

Location: IP

Stream: English

WGPA: 3.94

Year: Final year of UG

ECs: Thought that my top 3 for each category (minus research, I only had a small role as an RA) were very strong, although many did not have long duration

Capser: Definitely did not do as well as I thought I could have, but who knows

I had to grind out 3 brutal spring courses in between full time employment this summer just to be eligible at Ottawa, so I'm very thankful that it paid off

Stream: English
wGPA: 3.87
Current year:1st yr MSc
ECs: Heavy community involvement (including clinical experience), student clubs, academic employment, volunteer research experience. No publications in undergrad

Casper: Did not think it went well, ran out of time for a lot of my final statements.

Wondering if the GPA cutoff increased for this year since this was not indicated in the email this time.

Rejection
Date Stamp: 28/01/2016 - 9:51 AM

Location:OOP
Stream: English
wGPA: 3.96 (using OMSAS and then Ottawa's weighting system)
Current year:UG complete
ECs: Non-trad. shadowing in clinics/scrubbing in on surgery, many years working as a journeyperson to pay for school (really helped me relate to patients well), volunteerism position created working with disabled persons in rural communities to address underserved population needs, recreational sports, supplemental instruction, T.A., tutoring students with disabilities, limited research though it was completed independently incl. getting funding etc.  I have never done anything just for the sake of my app so ECs might come off as lacking focus, but I just grab opportunity as I see it..

Location: IP
Stream: English
wGPA: 3.99
Current year: 3rd year UG
ECs: Volunteer section was below average (Couple hospital positions and summer camp). ECs above average (VP clubs, provincial level sports). Research abroad and at hospital (no pubs).

Casper: Thought it went well. Felt I wrote enough for each scenario

I'm currently sitting here wondering what went wrong. Very salty at the moment. Any thoughts?

Long-time reader, first time poster...

Invite
Date Stamp:
28/01/2016 10:01 AM
Location: IP
Stream: English
wGPA: around 3.93
Current year: Non-trad, BSc '06, MBA '09
ECs: I'm an older non-trad, so I have a ton of work/volunteer experience, plus some "traditional" stuff I did 10 years ago during my UG. I actually listed almost no undergrad ECs except co-op placements, so maybe this goes against the rule that ECs actually have to be from your undergrad? Most of my "top 3" ECs were things I've done in the 10 years since my undergrad. Here's a quick summary: UG research, triathlete, coach, entrepreneur, military, part-time college prof, father of 2.

CASPER: I thought it went well - I have an interview at Mac so it must have been okay?

Starting to think I didn't do too well on the CASPer. Really wish we could get feedback on it. Oh well... Keepin' on truckin' :)

Location: IP

Stream: English

wGPA: 3.95ish

Current year: 4th year UG

ECs: Really not sure-- Average? (Volunteering, employment, Research, advocacy etc etc) Maybe my letters weren't stellar

CASPER: Good enough for Mac..soooo... should've been passable

I'm not sure what I was lacking, but I will treat this as a reminder to be humble at all times.  :D

GOOD LUCK TO THOSE INTERVIEWING  :)  :)

wGPA: 3.92 or something like that
Current year: 4th year UG

ECs: Research was strongest (2nd author on paper, some posters), a bit of volunteering, some oddball ECs (made PCR machine, wrote study aids), otherwise nothing much

CASPER: Who knows eh? I got an interview at Mac though, so probably fine at least

Rejection - Third year in a row
Date Stamp: 28/01/2016 - 10:56 AM
Location: IP
Stream: English
wGPA: 3.85
Current year: Currently completing my second undergraduate degree. MSc completed in 2014.

ECs: Multiple pubs/posters/oral presentations, hospital volunteering, toronto rehab volunteer, served on several grad student committees during my MSc, a few scholarships/travel grants, TA'd three courses, peer mentor, marathon runner, employed throughout my undergrad

I've decided I'm just going to apply to a Caribbean school (probably Saba). After 3 years of applying (Ontario and U.S.), writing the MCAT three times (34 was my highest score), and a total of 26 straight rejections (still waiting to hear from 9 more this year though), I just do not see myself ever getting into a North American school. Especially after seeing again and again people with even better stats being rejected.

Good luck to everyone.

Invite
Date Stamp: 28/01/2016 - 10:01 AM
Location: IP - OOO
Stream: English
wGPA: 3.93
Current year: Finished UG last year

ECs: Honestly pretty vanilla, surprised by the invite with rejection last year

- 2 years research work during UG (no pubs)

- mentoring/tutoring for 5 years

- various other small committments

CASPER: Felt ok, cut off on several 3rd questions responses but it is 2nd time writing it and been invited to mac 2 years in a row so figure I do decently even though I don't feel good coming out of it
