statsin
Looking for thoughts on what would be a good first elective in medical school when you are trying to decide if surgery is your thing and have had zero OR exposure prior to it? Trying to find a good balance b/w getting exposure to surgery but also not too intense that it is a bad experience as a med 1. Apart from this, also curious to hear thoughts on what people's first electives were and any pros or cons to their choice. Thanks!!
Lactic Folly
Do surgery. Rotating through medicine won't help you decide if surgery/the OR is for you. Your goal in preclerkship should be to get a taste of all potential areas of interest to help your decision making later on.
NLengr
I agree. Try a surgical specialty and get in the OR. That'll be a huge factor for deciding whether surgery is your thing.
ralk
Go surgery, and don't shy away from the intense. Worst thing you can do when considering surgery is draw an easy rotation, love what you experienced, and then get blindsided when the reality of surgery's typical intensity comes in full. Its gives you a good taste of surgical lifestyle while still remaining med student friendly since Gen Surg is very used to teaching students. Bambi
You cannot ride a bicycle by looking out the window. Life is about experience.
