Fellow dreamers:

 

Seeing as the trend seems to be that NOSM interview invites are being released earlier and earlier each admissions cycle, I thought I would get this ready for us.  This thread is for STATS only - let's keep interview discussion in another thread.

We typically wait until interview offers have been sent out before we list our stats. I think rural_roots was just providing the template for everyone  :)

Context: (born and raised rural southern ontario, 6 years in Thunder Bay, 2 years in Temiskaming Shores)

 

ECs: Lots of travel, varied work experience, outdoorsy things, organic farming, campus first response, wilderness first aid, hospital/community health/aboriginal health/family health volunteering. Shadowed 2 NOSM preceptor family physicians at a family health team in rural North Eastern Ontario for the past three years, as well as worked on several community preventative medicine projects as a volunteer with the health team.  Also worked with a local Aboriginal Organization on a community kitchen project.  Experience working in traditional healing settings with residential school survivors.

 

Non-trad?:  Oh yeah.

Context: Born and raised in small urban Northern Ontario

 

ECs: Currently working as a research assistant, previously worked at a local non-profit working with marginalized populations (drug using population, homeless, Indigenous, people at risk of HIV/HCV) developing and implementing an overdose prevention program, two years volunteering as an outreach worker (harm reduction/needle exchange), standardized patient at NOSM, 2.5 years as a Toastmaster (with leadership and communication achievements, and involvement with the executive committee), board member with Elizabeth Fry, ~10 years doing receptionist work at local walk-in clinic, two summers working at Science North, several research projects throughout undergrad and graduate degree (first author on two papers), multiple conference presentations, volunteer medical work in Africa, and physician shadowing throughout Northern Ontario.

ECs: I sit on the board of directors for the Elizabeth Fry Society of NWO, allocations committee with United Way, previously delivered Meals on Wheels, sat on city Accessibility Advisory Committee (implemented some cool programs to increase city wide accessibility), ran 1/2 marathons and Olympic triathlon + various other community sports, scuba certified with 13+ dives and deep certified, took Ojibway lessons and participate in a traditional sweat lodge ceremony, high school drama club and sports, international exchange in high school, working in Aboriginal CAS, case management with adults with ABIs, case management with children and youth with developmental delays and autism in a small rural community and within 2 Aboriginal communities, volunteer with a animal welfare agency, now working FT in chronic pain system use and personal experience and health promotion and illness prevention research, freelance rheumatic illness researcher, 2 poster presentations at national conference, national academic award for honour's thesis, grew up on my family farm helping there.

I went to the University of Guelph for both my undergrad and masters - however, my masters research was on Acute Gastrointestinal Illness in Inuit in Iqaluit, NU and Health Knowledge translations/exchange in Inuit populations in the Circumpolar North. I worked, traveled, and collaborated with Inuit researchers and community members for the two years and spent time in Iqaluit. I now work at a Family Health Team in NO in senior management - and have lived here for just over two years. I live out of town on a private road with my husband and dog. I am also the Founder and Director of a Canadian Charity that works in a very remote region of Ghana, West Africa.

ECs: Lots of experiences with vulnerable communities back home, a professional pianist and athlete, lots of work experiences, etc., but nothing from/in NO.

ECs: directed a Bible camp on a native reserve in northern Alberta for three years, volunteered at hospital throughout university, volunteered in Africa on a medical relief trip, lots of travelling over the past six years.

ECs: All kinds of stuff. I have a Business degree from Laurier, where I was heavily involved. Head Teaching Assistant, Orientation week Leader, and elected as President and CEO of my Students' Union in my final year. Also worked in industry at Procter and Gamble as a Sales Professional for just over a year after graduation.
Non-trad?: I think I am still considered traditional. Turning 25 in March.
