Are there certain family medicine residency programs that tend to give you better chance at matching to 2+1EM? Like rural vs urban or specific schools that tend to favor their own a lot more or have a lot more elective time?

 

Are there also family medicine programs that let you pick your schedule and your sites?

You can get into the 2+1 program in any core FM program, at any site, but there are certainly advantages to programs that give regular EM exposure as part of their core FM blocks. These do tend to be rural or regional programs.

No FM program is going to let you pick your schedule or your sites for core rotations. You'll typically be given a chance to state your preferences, but there are no guarantees. Elective time provides significant flexibility, which you get a fair bit of leeway to do where you want, though often you'll have to do them within your home province. Number of electives isn't greatly different between schools, as core rotations take up a fair bit of that time.

Other than elective time, how does one make themselves more competitive for +1 in ER? Letters, research etc?
