Interview Selection??

Hi everyone, I recently applied to Dalhousie as a Non-Maritime... my GPA is 4.0 and MCAT is 512 (meet the minimum requirements). I was under the impression that they look at your essays and supplemental information prior to the interview... however, reading what they posted on their website (attached as image) has me kinda confused. Even as Non-Maritime, do you still get an interview if you meet that cycles GPA/MCAT minimum?

The image you posted states that the Non-Maritime applicants are held to a higher threshold, which means that, even if you meet the minimum, you are not guaranteed an interview.    What that threshold may be is the mystery; however, I would think that it depends on the statistics of the non-maritime applicant pool. The supplemental is part of the overall scoring, not a factor for the interview in either maritime or non-maritime applicants.

Thanks for replying. Just to clarify – that 'threshold' is solely GPA/MCAT though? This fact kinda astonishes me.

It appears to be that way according to the 2016 Admissions Review Committee Report. GPA/MCAT, as stated in the report, are used as screening tools when it comes to deciding interviews. I am not speaking on behalf of the admissions committee; I am just using past experience and what the website states. You could imagine that the interview process would be nearly impossible if every Canadian applicant who met the minimum requirements were to receive an interview. I guess I am curious, what about it astonishes you?

After speaking with admissions a few times, it seems that OOP who meet the minimum GPA and MCAT thresholds are then scored based on their maritime connection essay (which is not the supplemental).

Good to know! I wasn't sure if that was the case, but it makes more sense. So, someone who meets (or is above) the minimums for OOP and has a strong connection essay could potentially have a stronger pre-interview application than someone with extremely high GPA/MCAT and no connection.

I can confirm as well that the ONLY factor (once minimums are passed) for non-Maritimers pre interview is the connection essay.

As a former non-maritimer, they also only invite the "top" 50 ish non-maritime applicants. I've had interviews the last 2 years and I'm considered maritime this year, but I had a very strong connections essay since the only time I didn't live in NS is for high school.

Ohhhhh!  This makes me nervous!  According to a member, invites did not come out until October 20 last year!  I think this year they might be later due to the lovely CASPer.

Casper takes a month to score, so our fates have been determined a long time ago! All it takes is some stats wiz on spss to curve us which shouldnt take longer than a day.

 

Edit: *to put us on a curve and cut off anyone 1.5 std below the mean

Apparently they have already emailed the applicants who did not meet the Casper cut-off.

Wow! So they've rejected those who didnt meet that cut-off... interesting. Does Dal admission explicitly tell you why you get rejected i.e. dont meet GPA, MCAT or Casper?

Thanks medbruh - good to know! I've been checking my email constantly... based on what we were told at the info session at Dal in June, I was expecting to be notified whether we "passed" or "failed" the CASPer

Apparently the email specifies that they have not met the Casper cut off.

Just called admissions, invites should come out this week. Also confirmed that if you didn't meet any cut offs, you should have gotten an email by now, so if you are a martimer, this week should be a good one for you

Just a heads up. For everyone who gets interview invites, the photo you send in is the photo they'll use for your student id if you're accepted, so make sure it's a good one!
