uOttawa Interview 2018 Discussion

Recommended Posts

can I just say I don't think you should look into this too much. In mine they were just scribbling like mad at everything I said for what I assume is a holistic conversation afterward. At the end I saw them flip the page and there was a whole page of writing (I didnt see numbers).

Hi everyone,

I had my morning interview this week and it didn't go well. I was exhausted from travelling and I had a bad night of sleep. Although I answered everything  and talked as much as possible about myself and personal experiences, I wasn't alert and I had to clarify a couple of questions (I wish I took dark chocolate or coffee before lol). My answers were also quite disorganised and I was repeating myself at times, hopefully content matters more because I was talking my thoughts only (just like Casper aka no structured answers). Also, at one point I interrupted my own answer out of nowhere to drink water because my throat was dry. Anyways, since they were quite heavy on ethical scenarios and role playing, I didn't get the chance to talk about myself as much as I wanted to, in fact I barely had the chance to discuss my interests and passions etc. I left the interview room and almost cried because of this last reason mainly. I need some moral support from fellow uottawa buddies thanks :'(

EDIT : went over the interview time allowed, I was quite slow and honestly my bad night of sleep made me unable to articulate well my thoughts at times. I feel down because I wasn't able to be the amazing person I am due to poor sleep, I can't function with limited sleep. Thanks for the support guys <3

Hey, don't worry too much. I've read people post about candidates so upset of their interview that they indeed did cry  after but got in the first round. Many of us aren't good at judging accurately how we did, and interviewers are also understandable of our nerves. I also had very little personal questions so I don't think they were interested in that. You did your best given the circumstances and now it is beyond your control. Believe in yourself and good luck

I know how you feel :( my performance was definitely affected by the stress of traveling (flight cancelations and missed connection flights because of delays, giving me labout an hour to get ready and into the mindset) and lack of sleep because of said traveling. I keep going over my answers and it makes me want to cry. This was probably my last chance at uOttawa because of the new requirement for next cycle (I have a D+ for one of my prereqs from 6-7 years ago). I feel like I didn't talk about myself at all and I completely screwed up at least 2 questions. :(

I've been told you can never know how well you did and to not try to analyze your performance. It's done now and all we can do is wait. Good luck :)

I'm so grateful for your fast reply, thanks for sharing your "interview trip" story. I'm sorry for what happened to you :( travelling takes up a lot of time and with a busy schedule it can be so difficult. What makes you think you screwed up 2 questions, if you don't mind sharing?

I'm sorry you feel like you screwed up your interview! :(

My first question caught me off guard and my answer didn't make any sense. For both questions I went in circles and stumbled on my words. I feel like I didn't even answer the question that the interviewer asked. My answers felt awkward.

I'm sure this is something many people who interviewed this year have in common.  I wouldn't worry about it too much since applicants are rated against each other, and everyone is experiencing the "same" interview.

@Vanderb Try not to worry about it too much (I know, I know, easier said than done) but I also felt like I majorly screwed up and felt quite nauseous for like an hour after my interview. I think that this is a very common feeling (feeling like you screwed up some questions), but there's nothing you can do now except wait! I am still trying to stop thinking about my bad answers even though I did my interview a few weeks ago, you're not alone in this. Hopefully everything will be positive for everyone of us here and we'll meet each other next year!

As someone who interviewed twice previously at Ottawa and thought I knew their style, I felt like this year's interview came completely out of left field and I was definitely caught off guard.

I was definitely not expecting my set of questions and thought I handled some of the scenarios rather awkwardly. Who knows what the outcome will be. Good luck to everyone

I feel your pain regarding the first question, it caught me off guard. I was so nervous and felt like I was just rambling. Half way through the answer in my head I was like "what am I doing", paused, took a breath, and tried to recover and do damage control LoL. In their heads they were probably like "what is this person doing".

That's exactly what happened to me!! Haha

I'm going crazy thinking about it .. especially since it may be my last chance because of the new requirement. I didn't get a B in my org chem lab :(

I'm someone who has interviewed twice previously and I support this message.

Same :(

Guys I know it's easier said than done, but don't think about it. Actively keep yourself preoccupied with things you enjoy or that would improve your application next year. If you get bad results in May you'll have deserved time for coping. But don't do this to yourselves now when it could all be premature.

Do they always contact at least one reference if they're considering you after the interviews? Or it just depends?

I am not sure.. but did one of your references recently get contacted? That seems promising to me!

No :( that's why I'm a bit concerned. It may just be me overthinking everything though lol

Anyone know if any of their ABS verifiers have been contacted? I'm dying y'all

i don't think they contact verifiers post-interview. it's all pre-interview since your ABS was measured before your interview invite.

Less than a week to go! Any idea what the subject line for an offer of admission may be? I want to know if either a) I celebrate or b) start finishing off the supply from the LCBO I would probably have bought the night before.

Usually, the subject line is pretty vague! I remember my year I thought I didn't get in because of it, but then I saw the beginning of the message content and it started with: Congratulations! So the emotions I went through in the span of 0.2 seconds was pretty intense!

Good luck to all of you! :)
