Why would you go to an Australian dental school when you've got several good ones in Canada?

They are obviously looking at direct entry from high school, in order to save time.

This. In Canada it realistically takes 8 years after HS to become a dentist, best case scenario 6 years. Whereas in Australia you enter directly from HS into a 5 year program.

Where in english Canada can you become a dentist in 6 years? Minimum 3 years of undergrad and 4 years of dental school, but that is if you are an all-star. Most people are  4+4, and many are 9-10 years.

Given reciprocity with Australia, dental school there is not a terrible idea. Even if it takes you a bit of time to prep and pass the Canadian boards, you're still well ahead of the game.

Some dental schools in Canada are also quite expensive: UofT is 40,000$/year  and UBC is about 55,000-60,000$/year for mandatory fees.

So if there is 5 or 6 year straight from HS pathways for dentistry, its not a bad idea. Save multiple years, and very likely save cost given you don't also have to get an undergrad degree(and the associated living costs for those years).

I've never really heard of anyone doing dentistry in Australia out of high school though, I have only known many many undergrad peers head to Australia for Dentistry when Canada didn't pan out and do the 4 year GEM programs, that require a bachelors.
