Second Degree - Help :(

MilkMan

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am in my second year of my second degree. In my first year of my second degree I had a 3.93 GPA, in my second year which I am currently in, it has not been going great. First semester I had a GPA of 3.7. I am hoping to get a 3.9 in my second semester and get a 3.8 GPA which will give me a 2 year GPA of 3.87. My cGPA for both my degrees after this year assuming I do well this semester is 3.55ish.

Maybe I am overthinking things, but since I did poorly last semester I am starting to panic. I am turning 24 in a couple of months, and I am not handling stress very well. My mental health isn't doing too well. I am super scared about what happens next and I feel hopeless. I studied so hard last semester, even harder than my first year of my second undergrad, but I did worse. If I get a 4.0 next year (highly unlikely) my wGPA for uOttawa will be around 3.92, which barely makes me competitive.

I am not handling the stress very well and I am starting to think this maybe not for me. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

MilkMan

Hey MilkMan,

First,

  • Close your eyes.
  • Take a deep breath.

'I am starting to think this maybe not for me'

  • Just because you had a bad semester, this doesn't kill your dream.
  • Forget about all the fancy calculations and focus on your classes.
  • You have demonstrated that you can get a 3.93 GPA.
  • There is no reason to doubt yourself.
  • Don't forget that some universities look at best 2Y or only your second-degree.
  • Your #1 priority for this semester should be : get the best GPA possible.

'I am turning 24 in a couple of months'

  • You will turn 24 no matter what you do.
  • And next year, you will turn 25.
  • And the year after, you'll be 26.
  • Weither or not you pursue medicine.
  • Therefore, is your age of any relevance: No.

'I am not handling stress very well'

  • Don't let things overwhelm you.
  • Try to find ways to lower your stress levels
    • Exercise;
    • Spending time with family and friends;
    • Sleep better;
    • Get more organized
  • If you need help, seek help. No shame.
  • But be careful, your mental health passes before any dream.

'If I get a 4.0 next year (highly unlikely)'

  • And why exactly would this be highly unlikely?
  • It won't be easy, but I am sure you can make it.
  • Haven't you demonstrated that you can get a 3.93 GPA before? Yes

Take-home message

  • The best defence to fight all of your fears is to give the best of yourself right now.

Best of luck man :D

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I needed to hear this. :)

You need to prioritize here, and get your mental health in order first. You need to identify what the issues are that are preventing you from getting the grades you want and then work on those before continuing. Don't keep pushing yourself as a lower GPA next semester will only hurt you. You should only continue with your second degree when you can be sure you can do well, and if that means taking a semester off to work on mental health then so be it.
