Just to add onto this with regards to matching, either school gives you every opportunity to match in whatever program you want. With going to all the post-match talks of the students this year (at McGill), I believe that reasons for not matching are due to not preparing yourself adequately for a specific speciality that you would like compounded with poor management of your application list.

Wether you go to UoT or McGill  and don't match, the outcome would have likely been the same had you chosen the other school. It is individual factors rather than school factors that decide matching results, and people who are not in medical school yet tend to weigh "prestige" of school more heavily than they should.

Thats just my 0.02$

McGill consistently matches badly compared to the french schools (and especially recently) so at this point, it is more than just a mentality problem amongst its students. They need to do something about it because clearly they aren't preparing them for CaRMS in a proper way (whether it is a matter of performance or strategy).

2017: McGill --> 89,6% French Schools (combined) --> 95,4%

2016: McGill --> 93,8% French Schools (combined) --> 94,6%

2015: McGill --> 96,1% French Schools (combined) --> 96,3%

2014: McGill --> 95,9% French Schools (combined) --> 94,4%

2013: McGill --> 92,4% French Schools (combined) --> 93,1%

All in all, they've only done better in one of the last 5 years and the gap is widening. That's also only considering R1. More McGill students remain unmatched in R2 than in the french schools as well.

To a non-negligible extent, this is attributable to the fact that graduates from French schools are more likely to pick FM compared to McGill students (I'm not sure if that's what you qualified to be a "mentality problem" lmao). I don't see any basis at all to what you are saying and if you have anything to add to support the assertion that "clearly they aren't preparing them for CarMS in a proper way" other than this number that says very little about how McGill students are being prepared for CaRMS, please do so. Otherwise refrain from making baseless statements such as this one.

In a case like this, it isn't the why that matters, but rather the result. McGill students are going unmatched when they probably shouldn't. There must be a reason for that. It's McGill's job to figure that out, not mine.

SunAndMoon addresses an important point. In a report (circa 2010), it was noted that:

  • "McGill has the smallest percentage of students choosing family medicine as a career of all 17 medical schools in Canada. Although specialist physicians and medical research clearly contribute to societal needs, an appropriate balance needs to be found, with more of our graduates choosing family medicine."
  • "Currently only 18% of McGill graduates choose family medicine as their first choice. We must increase enrollment in family medicine to levels similar to peer-institutions (e.g. University of Toronto, ~30%)."

They have tried to address this through the implementation of the longitudinal family medicine experience (LFME) through the new curriculum, but I am unsure what the impact is as of the last few CaRMS cycles. My thoughts are that not much has changed.

Absolutely! It's not your job to figure that out, so don't.

I don't see the consistency in bad matching, as the French schools never did better than McGill by anything more than 0.8 percent until just this past year, which seems to be the anomaly here. Note also that McGill is just one school while "the french schools" are the averages of three schools, so all this shows is that McGill is never exactly average, but they are pretty close by within 1 percent, with minor fluctuations due to possibly a myriad of factors, and we all know that by definition no single school is exactly average. You have to be looking at a larger data set and also calculate a significant difference of McGill from the average trend in order to logically claim what you are trying to claim.

 Considering it is you as an individual that chooses how to go about applying for CaRMS, it is your responsibility to do so in a manner that will lead to your greatest success. I think that placing the blame externally rather than internally on the individual is a poor mentality to have.

CaRMS is still a complicated beast and as such, the faculties also have a duty to properly prepare their student for it, which is something they don't seem to always realize.

Does anyone know when decisions on deferrals are made? That could help predict waitlist movement.

Decisions are made on a rolling basis, but anyone who has an intention to defer must make their intention known by July 1. Another point where there may be more movement will be June 15 when the deposit becomes non-refundable.

Hey guys based on how the wait-list is moving- it's May 18 and we are already at 12. How deep do you think it will go this year? I am 28, do you guys think I still have a chance based on the year it went 25?

I hope it's the case for you, I just don't want to venture too far and give you false hope.. I think 20 becomes realistic for this year, maybe more, but we never know when it'll stop progressing. All the important results are out for Quebec and Ontario schools, so I really don't know how much more it's gonna move..
