COVID-19 REMINDER TO ISOLATE
oneday1 and 10 others reacted to rogerroger for a topic
PM101, As an emergency physician and as one who has helped manage the sick with COVID-19 on the front lines, I beseech everyone to isolate at this time. These are historic and truly exceptional times. As such, this moment demands an equally historic and exceptional act from all. Everyone must stay home. Go out ONLY if absolutely needed. Every time one ventures out of isolation needlessly, you place your family, friends, public, and healthcare staff at unacceptable risk. This is of the utmost and highest level of importance. Tell everyone you know this message. Before this challe11 points -

Acceptance letter release date?
acacna and 4 others reacted to Jessletmein for a topic
Morning everybody I created an actual account out of sheer desperation, I don't really have anything good to say except I'm glad I have these posts to read each day, as a non-trad applicant I don't have any friends who are going through this with me so having an online forum and hearing everyone else echo my anxieties has been nice. Really hoping admissions will take pity on us and release the letters ASAP, each day is getting more challenging especially with all my ECs cancelled, I've had way too much time to refresh my email!!!5 points -

I agree. I'm generally quite sanguine when it comes to waiting til the last minute, but at this point, it wouldn't make any sense to still have more interview spots to fill. I don't think it's healthy for us to expect anything other than a rejection. So long, UofT. Though optimist that I am, I do think that for everyone who's made it to this point, it likely means that we have the qualifications to interview, and that an alternate assortment of adcoms might have selected some of us to interview. We're all qualified, but there is a necessary arbitrariness to the selection proce4 points -

Hey guys! Je1 point

Currently looking for associateship position and this thread was a very depressing read LOL. Quick comment about finances: people constantly give examples of "your income will be ___ if you try to pay off your debt in 10 years, which is basically the income of a teacher/nurse/etc." Is this perspective actually accurate? Excluding OSAP, there is absolutely no pressure to pay off your debt - the bank LOC does not convert into a loan, and all you're forced to pay is the monthly interest (which for me is currently about 750 dollars a month on a 230k debt). In fact, very few other careers off1 point -
I wonder how much of it is due to FOMO? Having said that, OP or anybody else, I hope it gets better. I think whatever the reasons may be, transitioning to residency is a challenging time for most if not all of us. It's a big change for a lot of people -- it could be their first time away from friends/family/loved ones, especially more people are coupled up during med school. Transitioning to med school might have been less of a hurdle given how many people knew one another from undergrad, and given how preclerkship might have been more similar to undergrad. So it is completely under1 point

Wow. Your post strikes me as quite judgmental. Why is it necessary to characterize this person's (I will not assume their gender) feelings as a lack of resilience or gratitude? Are we not allowed to feel sad and depressed in life, even if things look great on the exterior? This person's reality is that they're about to move away from family, friends, girlfriend for 5+ years, and that's really hitting home. I think they deserve sympathy rather than scorn. Their feelings are quite valid. In fact, residents in Canada have committed suicide in very similar circumstances. Family, friends, significa1 point -

People in my program go home across the country every 4-6 weeks. IMHO 2-5 years at a crappy place to do the specialty you want is worth it. You'll make friends with your fellow residents, many who are also moving away from friends and family to a new city. You're there to do a job, you'll be ok. And you can always try to transfer even if the odds are low.1 point -
Residency goes by quickly. Faster than undergrad, faster than medical school. You'll be so busy most of the time you won't have time to mope. If you are really invested in your relationship with your girlfriend, there are ways to make it work. You have 4 weeks of vacation to spend with each other as well as taking a couple of personal days to see each other on weekends sounds nice even if short lived. Plus there's things like skype/facebook messenger/whatsapp for the times you need her through the week. You will slowly adapt to a new life in your new city and make new lifelong friends.
