When will the decisions be sent out?
MEDusa and one other reacted to HoopDreams for a topic
With the current situation, the different faculties, universities and governing-bodies in medicine are extremely busy trying to accommodate current and future students. Clerks have been removed from hospitals, some staff physicians are on quarantine and first-year students are waiting to resume classes online. Even the Royal College exam has been cancelled and delayed. Let's face it : the country is basically closed. Mortgages payments, electricity bills, municipal taxes, university semesters all have been cancelled or postponed. Therefore, my only advice is to not flood the mails and phon2 points -

Actually, the last time i looked into workforce studies on this topic(2 years ago), most FMGs looking to train in the US are hoping to stay and build a new life..by utilizing the various different visa-waiver programs, green card pathways etc to stay. If you think about it, most aren't coming from Iran, India and China to train in FM/IM/Gen surg etc in Podunk USA to then just go back. They could have done similar training back home. They are going through all the expensive USMLES/time-sinks in exam prep.. doing it for the chance at a better life with higher income than what back home would1 point -

The match rate for all IMGs who get to the interview stage is about 20%. The percentage is much lower if you consider the entire applicant pool. Of the IMGs who match, about 2/3rds are actually CSAs (Canadians who studied abroad), and 1/3rd are true IMGs (born and trained overseas). The conventional way to match is to first meet cutoffs on the relevant exams, and then do well on your interview(s). Canadian clinical experience and letters of reference are helpful, but not absolutely necessary. I had none, and still matched to my first choice. Full disclosure, I am a CSA. What I mentio1 point -

My argument exactly. if the program is doing its job and your PD is willing to sign off on your FITER, you ought to have a Very high likelihood of a pass. I feel worse for those trying to do the exams who did not do residency here and hoped this was their door to starting Canadian practise. current circumstances will fast forward more innovative testing and examination strategies being put in place. I think it’s a good thing.1 point

I had absolutely no qualms about signing the petition. Doctors are about to face a COVID shitstorm, and I don’t think it is humane to indefinitely postpone certification and have this looming while dealing with the pandemic. We need these specialists to be able to go out and provide care to their communities now, and not half-assed. Their mental faculties will already be stretched to the limit as new staff and with COVID demands. The studying was basically done, but the opportunity is now lost for them to prove it with a local exam, written and/or OSCE. 6 months from now? Take their program di1 point

This might be the year to do a fellowship year, so at least you have an income and potential to take some vacation to study... I feel for all the final year royal college specialty residents. Horrible position to be in! For what it's worth, I signed the petition. These are exceptional times we are in, we need to make exceptional decisions.1 point

Bonsoir!

Probably - they just in fact sent out an email explaining why they did what they did - and mentioned Sept 2020 would be the earliest time they can hold the exams. They also said people would be giving at least 6 weeks notice (which in their slow way of doing things means they have to be 100% sure 6 weeks in advance so they won't be in a hurry). I am not sure how that will work with all of the examiners either - most staff schedules are pretty rigid at least for some. I have a lot of friends that are going through this - just about to be ready to practice and then this - it is very hard.1 point

Affects of COVID-19 on course grades
HongHongHong reacted to Pterygoid for a topic
My understanding is that UBC medicine wants to see candidates excelling in courses with a full-course load, while taking ECs. If it doesn't come from this semester (or year), I think it will need to be shown in another year. In general, medical schools would like to see your grades. Having said that, this semester is likely going to be an exception. But evidence of doing well with a full-course load has to show up somewhere from I understand.1 point -

Matured Student applying to Medical School
Super_lynx reacted to Brockolli911 for a topic
Research each and every medical school in Canada. They are all different in the evaluation. I would also spend the money for a premed advisor. That really helps. Non-trad/Mature applicants have a tough time. U of Calgary eliminates any school that is 10 years old. So that helps, but you need a minimum of 2 years full time, graduate school will count as one year full time so you may only need to complete one more year full time. I to am a mature applicant with a very non-traditional pathway and have struggled. I am headed back to school in September to take Rural Pre-Med full time to1 point -

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately despite using an alternative email address, I was still unable to receive the Kira email. After calling, they sent it to me as a word doc. In the document it says for more information on the assessment process, proceed by clicking the ‘Check In’ button below! Since this was a word doc, I don't have a check in button. Does anyone mind sharing this link that gives more info about the assessment process with me? Thank you in advance.0 points
