  1. I feel the same as you. I'm pretty set on FM because I am content with it (I don't mind the "negatives") and have chosen to focus more on other aspects of my life that make me happy. I think it depends on your personality. Personally, I used to be much more ambitious when I was younger. But I saw what pursuing success at all costs leads to and I realized it wasn't worth it to me. I like the rest of my life too much. Case in point: As intellectually satisfying and enjoyable it can be to understand something, I find that whatever pleasure I get from an intellectual pursuit is the same pleasure I

  4. Absolutely correct. I don't mean for this to be a dig at Ostracized, because in early April, we didn't have all the the retrospective data we have now, and also things seemed quite dim with new cases surpassing 500+ daily. We just didn't know. I just would caution how we react in times of uncertainty. Several media outlets really tried to sensationalize this with regards to dentists. Hygienists have been the most willing to jump on board to paint this profession as a "ticking time bomb", "death trap", and "the most dangerous job". These are direct statements they made in articles. Also, these

  5. I asked a preceptor for Strong ref letter and she agreed! Now i also worked with her on a project where I am first author on paper and I noticed that she added another student that did not do any work on my manuscript so I asked her politely saying that I would like to give like to give credit where it’s due can u tell me how did that student contribute.. and I said I also said I apologize if I missed something About that students contribution.... Is it a problem that I said that? Would That affect my ref letter?

    Academic Reference

If the prof is really your only option, definitely follow the above advice ^^. However, I'd really caution about using a referee that doesn't know you very well- it's better to use someone of lower "prestige" that knows you really well than someone who doesn't know you very well. You can even use high school teachers- I know multiple people who have done so and been successful. Personally, mine was my high school principal. Also note (for OMSAS at least) that it's academic OR employment, so it doesn't have to be academic at all, it can be a boss or supervisor at any job you've had

  9. I feel I should get paid for all the advices I gave for free (I'm joking btw, I would never ask any money for that!) Funny story (not so funny though), I bought the B*Mo book to prepare for MMIs, and in it they say that their 40k$ program (you've read that right - but it's discounted at 18k right now, what a deal) doesn't advantage the wealthy people, and that the MMIs are causing more disparities than that. Lol. What a joke. Oh and they also try to make you believe that you can never be successful without it. I guess my advice is, don't buy that crap & don't give your money to t

Congratulations! Does this mean that there are a portion of graduate students that are unable to complete their degree on-time and then have their offer revoked as a result?

  12. I was in the same boat during clerkship and decided to pursue FM. I enjoyed the cerebral aspects of IM and really digging deep into patients' issues, however, realized that I am one of those people who work to live, not the other way around. I wanted the flexibility and time to spend it with my significant other and the thought of relocating potentially three to four times up until staff life was not something I wanted. At the end of four years, I just wanted to be 'done' and move on with life, rather than go through another gruelling 5-6 years of stress and uncertainty. I think my happi

    Asking for ref letter...

It was lowkey the wrong thing to say dude. This is coming from experience as a MSc student and having a supervisor

  14. I'm sure there have been those that have regrets, but its super specific to individual situations. That being said, the trend I have seen is that those who started later on after a different career seem to be more satisfied, as they don't have the "what-if" or grass is greener thoughts that those who went to med school straight out of undergrad do. I think it's important you actually talk to and if possible see what the day to day of a rural GP is, and make sure you have an accurate read of what life is like, both the ups and the downs. If you've maxed out your current career and you are unsat

  15. Would you be able to elaborate further on your goals that require a significant income (e.g. buy a 1M cottage home) and the potential timeline you would like to reach it by (e.g. At age 40)? While for most people I would counsel them on the merits of doing the job out of interest, I think in your case there seems to be a component that may be determined fairly accurately through financial modelling. As a non-trad myself the math doesn't always work out if you have earlier life goals. I think for many people you do come out ahead in medicine but it is often at the tail end of your career rather

I think this "study" was largely an excuse for the mostly male authors to creep their female colleagues in bikinis. The pressure to publish something then compelled them to write this regrettable paper.

good grief - of all the things a research team could study in all the world to improve the treatment and care of patients this is the topic they decide to cover? Then they actually trolled hundreds of doctors to look at their social media accounts and graded them on various behaviours....... The morality police are out in full force - this crap shouldn't have even be published. also from a purely experimental design point of view isn't this study horrible? I mean only 1/2 of the vascular residents were actually found - so what you really saying is of the residents that even care to be op

  22. Personally I think they should just disband QuARMs and move the seats to the undergrad pool. I really wonder how requiring sky high high school grades and crazy ECs supports "Diversity and Equity". As I see it, the people benefiting from it are those who are well-connected enough to have impressive high school ECs+high grades AND know about QuARMs. This also means these high schoolers only get one shot at the seats, just move those reserved seats to the undergrad pool and select indigenous/black students there, where you're more likely to get a more diverse pool anyway since this move blocks o

  34. I am not at all surprised to hear this to be honest. I am also in western Canada and considered opening LOC with TD for the same reasons you've listed. Gladly I've decided not to based on a very brief interaction I had with their financial advisor who claimed that the interest rate for me will be prime + 1.0% and the maximum amount will be 275k. A simple google search tells me that neither of those values are correct. They also repeatedly asked me whether I'm employed and found it so very odd that I - a medical student with so much time on my hands - am not.

  35. I’m in western Canada, but I’ve been using TD for my LOC. I thought it would be easier since I banked with them for years prior and I have some rsps with them, HUGE mistake. I would advise everyone to stay far away from TD bank for these LOCs. I have had nothing but problems, the issue being that TD doesn’t know their own product. It’s impossible to get help because they don’t have specific advisors for the professional student LOCs. In the two years I have been using it they have frozen me out of my LOC because they claim I didn’t send in my proof of enrolment, they have charged me mont
