My 2 cents.

  2. lol as an aside on the other hand doctors are notorious for writing not enough, like how many times do radiologist get a req for xray with no clinical history? maybe your carms essay can just be: S: me = super cand. (rest illegible handwriting) O: me = >99% other cand. (rest illegible handwriting) A: DC other cand. (rest illegible handwriting) P: me match . (rest illegible handwriting)

ASAP. Definitely speak to an insurance broker who can figure out what the best deal is. I used to have both OMA and the RBC/CFMS, neither of which required a medical or asked about mental illness. I hear that the CFMS deal now does ask unfortunately - which is awful but there you go. You want to get it ASAP so you can start the clock on the preexisting condition rider. I know some people have also had luck getting MH exclusions removed after a certain period of time of having the policy without making a claim. Basically, get it locked in as soon as possible.

  5. And on the flip side, I am aware of plenty colleagues who were solid/stellar FM applicants and not match to the home school/province. And certainly all-in on FM and not backing up. They still matched to excellent FM programs no doubt, but 1000's of KM away from home. Though FM is 2 years only, so it wasn't the end of the world and they made their way back home to set up shop. I would say a solid 1/3 of those who applied urban FM from my alma mater, as first choice program, ended up out of province(likely some of those could have matched in province if they ranked rural higher on their

  6. FM is generally easy to match to, as long you are flexible with location and apply broadly. If you are tied to a certain region/city, then it can be sometimes difficult to match to, just the same as 5 year programs. Region specific variation happens all the time. Do your best, and hope for the best - that is all you can do.

There are some that doesn't ask for medicals or only ask a few simple question (Eg do you smoke). I know RBC is a popular one. OMA in Ontario is popular, I don't know what associations offer in Quebec though. I think near end of med school is a good time. You want to sign up before you enter residency because residency is very stressful and can exacerbate or even create de novo all kinds of physical and mental stresses. Even though in Ontario the hospital offer you disability it's still a good idea to sign up with an external provider because once you sign up when you are young usually t

  9. I got printed stacks of personal letters. No way I'm counting that. One of my colleagues, however, somehow did word counts, and brought one overcount to our program director. He basically said if you're a little over, it's okay. I still recommend that you adhere to the limit. If you got this far in life, you can wordsmith your way out of 50 words.

    Pass/fail - yay or nay ?

  12. Is finance a consideration? If not you have a chance at some USMD/USDO. It's too late now but come next summer apply early and broadly, there are a fair number of CDN friendly schools but they are $$$. Ireland/Australia/Carib is kind of risky. Let us know if you have any PR/citizenship in US or Europe, that could of course help you. If none of the above option is palatable, then maybe do more courses to improve your GPA. I usually don't recommend this option unless there are no other options because it's a risk as well. What if you bomb a course and end up worse off?

  13. Looks fine to me. Maybe have a one liner in your personal statements about how you took a wide breadth of electives across those fields you listed to broaden the knowledge of the things you saw during your FM electives. If I saw 4 weeks FM with that kind of spread I wouldn't be worried about the applicant. There's also not that much overlap between Peds and Geri or GIM so I think you just look like you wanted a well rounded experience with your electives.

  14. Based on the number of people who posted in previous years vs the number of people who posted yesterday it doesn't even seem like 33% of total invites were sent yesterday. It's possible there will be a couple more smaller waves to come in order to fill up the first interview date.

    Casper for CaRMS

Funny how the creator of CASPer isn't requiring it for PGME, almost as if CASPer isn't validated for residency outcomes especially the new CBME curriculum and delivery...

Hi, thanks for offering to help! The official casper practice test has the following question, and I'm thinking of better ways to answer it. You are asked to put three items into a time capsule, which will be opened in 300 years. This time capsule is intended to reflect the areas of humanity that are going well, and those that need improvement, in the current year. What areas, both positive and negative, do you feel should be highlighted? Explain why you consider these to be key areas. What items would you put in the capsule? Explain your response.

  19. I was debating for a long time now regarding whether or not to post here...sadly my dream of becoming a physician has not, and will not ever be realized. However I would still like to share my story, which I will reluctantly call a success story (though really, only time will tell). It's going to be long (as an after note: It took me about 2.5 hours to type), and I apologize in advance. I don't mean to be presumptuous here and assume that anyone really cares about my story, but I am thinking of writing an autobiography as it would likely be fairly entertaining. ------------------------ Early
