  1. This forum is a useful resource for many because of the great people who participate in discussions posted. Everyone is here to help each other, and to make it into (and through and beyond) medical school. In order to optimize the usefulness of the forums we ask that you follow some simple guidelines and to respect the following: 1) Professional behavior and positive contributions This is a pre/health professional forum and professional behavior and treatment of other users is expected. While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate insulting posts or personal attacks. Insulting, racist, sexist, etc remarks have no place on these forums. Offenders should be reported to the mods and they will be warned and/or banned if necessary. Treat all within the pm101 community with respect. All threads and posts must be written with the intention of being helpful and providing meaningful content. Those guests found to be misrepresenting themselves will be banned. 9) No multiple accounts Just use one account. Multiple accounts are at risk of being banned and future registration blocked at the discretion of the moderators. Note, your registration information is visible to the moderators who can easily identify users using multiple accounts. 10) Keep your signature reasonable Your signature should not contain more than your name and other associated identifying information. 7. I'm going to speak bluntly here. I hope I do not offend... Most if not all people going into medicine neglect to understand or simply can't understand just how rubbish the hours can be. However, even if you do consider this fact even fewer grasp the effect these endless work hours have on one's other interests and lifestyle. We all love medicine. But lots of us love other things too. One of the biggest things you learn in clerkship is what lifestyle choices are available through the different specialties. This is huge. During clerkship you glimpse the life of a family doc for 2 months then that of a surgeon then that of an internist etc. You also start experiencing call... Call blows. Few jobs with the exception of certain military roles demand you stay awake and working 26-30 hrs straight. Do you know how much life sucks when you got a couple of these days a week? Do this 6-8 times a month and your month is consumed with work and sleep. Don't forget when you are not on call you still often pull 10-12hr work days. Sure, it gets a bit better after residency, but that is all relative to the lifestyle options avaiable to staff in other specalties. Due to these factors many quickly notice that they might love the field but they can't stand the scene (eg. lifestyle choice) that goes along with it. By the end of clerkship people often divide themselves into one of two camps. You have the folks who are speciality focused versus those who are lifestyle focused. Go look at the most competitive specialties, derm, optho, rads, emerg, anesthesia, plastics etc. Compared to most specialties these compensate well and even better when you consider the hours worked. But they also provide fairly good hours and work life balance. Family med has a lot of spots and therefore is less competitive. But family is also lifestyle focused. Also you can do a lot of specialized stuff as a family doc, palliative, emerg, pain med, sports med, the list is huge. You don't have to do general family. To a lot of people family starts looking pretty good when you consider the work enviroment I mentioned above. I'm not in family med, but when selecting my specality choice lifestyle was a big factor. I love medicine. But I love other things just as much and medicine will only be part of what I do. With this mindset I appreciate why many gravitate towards FM.
  8. I think non-med students and pre-clerks would be surprised how clerkship changes one's perspective on this. As someone who is in a five year program it was certainly tempting during CaRMS to consider just getting the training done with in 2 yrs vs 5. I would not be shocked if a bunch of FM residents would list this as a "top 3 reason" for selecting family. I also don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to just finish up and get out into the real workplace.
  9. Partially related to this topic... Visitors to this thread may find a post I wrote right after writing the MCC exam part I interesting. See: http://www.premed101.com/forums/showpost.php?p=705679&postcount=15 I talk about how I studied, how I found the exam itself etc. In the end the way that I studied for this exam worked well. But heads up, this is not a feel good exam. I think few people leave this exam feeling like they nailed it. But in the the end it works out for almost everyone who attends a Canadian med school. Virtually all CMGs pass.
  10. It is a tradition at UT meds to "name" the classes. This tradition seems to goes way back into the early days of the faculty. The 4th year clerks graduating next year in the spring of 2011 are in the 1T1 class. I am a third year, I graduate in 2012, my class is 1T2. The first years are in the 1T4 class, they graduate in 2014. See how it works? The tradition stems from the 20th century. Back in 1946 for example the 4T6 class would sound like "four-T-six" when said out loud. The "T" is obviously a nod to Toronto. The whole play on the letter T does not work so well now that we are in the 21st century - but the tradition has stuck around. Hope that clears it up.
  11. This might make a good separate thread. Just a thought in hopes of keeping the stats thread clean and easy to read for the applicants.
  12. Wha? Hold on. In no way do my comments apply to the Western MD program. Where did I say such a thing? Why can't I compare a difference in faculty concern between undergrad and med? If it is different then it is different and worth mentioning. The generalization probably applies to every institution. I just happen to have Western as my alma mater. Yet even more importantly I am not saying the undergrad program at UWO has problems. No where did I say profs were poor, quite the contrary actually... I simply said my experience in this one regards was even MORE positive at UT. It is relative. This is an important point. However, if other people may misread or misquote me then consider the following a disclaimer: There is no reason to doubt that Western is wonderful and terrific too. Now could I suggest we try to keep this Toronto Meds focused. I think this is a useful thread for those applying to Toronto.
  13. The comment regarding faculty not caring about students is not just wrong. It is massively wrong. I have had the honor and privilege of working with faculty on multiple occasions, including all those faculty members mentioned by name here. They have a deep passion for students and medical education. The fact that many tirelessly dedicate extra unpaid time to furthering our education stands testament to this fact. No one in their right mind would take on such a job on top of normal clinical work without having a deep passion for medical education. To do otherwise would quite frankly make no sense. Faculty has reached out to students continuously. The grade referendum, pre-clerkship renewal and clerkship renewal initiatives are evidence of faculty's desire to include students in the decision making process. To place all this in context I can say with conviction that my experience with Toronto med faculty has been 100x more positive than my past experience with faculty at other institutions. UT has its unique issues, as does any medical school. Yet, faculty concern for students is an area in which we excel. Students may not always agree with the decisions made by faculty. Yet, us students are trainees, and view faculty affairs from a limited perspective. Students must not forget this fact. Yet, from my several hours a month spent one-on-one with faculty since 2008 I have never received the impression that they do not have our interests at heart. Disagreeing with faculty should not be confused with implied lack of care towards students.
  14. Hey! I don't know much about this. But I have a family member who is a faculty of education prof at Nipissing. I don't know if this is worth anything, but apparently the quality has decreased substantially at Nipissing.
  15. That UWO scale is incredibly beautiful and that is an understatement. Who runs ****? Yes, that is right, Western runs ****. Now if I only had a decent MCAT score at hand I could finish my AMCAS aps... Darn MCAT forcing me to apply to the states late.... And damn does that course hour thing look confusing. If I can figure that out they should tag a few bonus points onto that GPA....
