  1. Hello. I'm starting at Mac Med in St Catharine's this fall. Am a single parent and am working on pulling together child care options. Am focusing first on the first 3 months as there will be a commute to Hamilton campus that will require extended child care 2-3 times per week. Wondering if there are any med parents at NRC (or elsewhere) that can recommend a live-out nanny. I'm looking at a variety of child care options and want to have a child care provider I can rely on in the AM and PM for the extended days i'll have to spend in Hamilton for MF1. Any leads would be much appreciated.
  2. I was accepted recently to McMaster's School of Medicine and will be moving close to their Niagara Regional Campus for 3 years. This is a listing for my home in Ottawa. I hope to rent it for the time my daughter and I are away. It might be perfect for incoming med students at Ottawa U. Beautiful and bright 3 bedroom townhouse for rent in Greenboro Ottawa. At the end of a row in a quiet and cozy cul-de-sac where children play basketball in the summer and slide down the snow removal mountain in the winter. A neighbour, on one side only, is an elderly “auntie” who knits socks for my little o
  3. lol ) Fortunately she is so far mostly a pleasure and on a rare occasion a pain. I want to make this transition as easy as I can for her but i imagine, ultimately, there will be some adjusting for both Mommy and her
  4. Hello I was recently offered admission to the Niagara regional campus and, as a single parent of a soon to be 5 year old, I'd like to learn more about schools and child care options in the area. If you or someone you know was/is a parent at the Niagara campus I would be very grateful to connect. Any pointers in the right direction would be very appreciated as I start my research Thanks

  7. Result: Accepted off the waitlist today! (Niagara Campus) The initial email came in around 11:30 am cGPA: 3.76 MCAT: CARS 127 ECs: 16 yrs of experience in health care (community health centres and hospital) as a social worker, writer, mosaic artist Interview: felt OK. I don't think I bombed any stations, something reasonably intelligent to say at each station, some stations felt stronger than others, some stations dealt with issues/scenarios that I am very familiar with CASPER: felt great about it, a lot to rich opportunities for answers non traditional applicant in province

  12. Great work Richard and all the very best! I'm just discovering your thread/story now. I interviewed at Mac this cycle as well. I would have sent you good vibes. I hope everything works out fantastic for you.
  13. Thanks. I'm a single parent and am having serious second thoughts about leaving my home city where my support network is. Especially come clerkship. Am re-thinking a second degree (BSc) to allow me the option of applying to University of Ottawa. That option seems wisest but also like the time it will take to complete isn't feasible given that I'm 41. Not sure. Any non-trads on here with children?
  14. Really enjoying reading everyone's stories. Such vim, vigour and courage on here. I am a non traditional applicant giving Mac another go this year. I applied to Mac back in 2011, got an interview, got on the wait list, didn't get in, then had an "unexpected" little one and decided recently to try again. Am nerve wracked over writing another MCAT in September. Scored an 8 on the old MCAT and must score at least a 123 on the new one, hopefully higher. Not sure if I am starting to study early enough but plan to re-write and re-apply again at least a couple of more times. I'm 41, a clinical social
  15. Yes, thanks! Am still doing the calculations for my wGPA. The number I had calculated for my Mac application is different than what is required for U of O. Unfortunately my first undergraduate year is the strongest and it won't be considered for U of O. Looks like the French stream may be my only option. Although my ECs and interview would be strong, without a competitive wGPA, that's all she wrote... I am still considering the option of Mac and may apply to both although relocating (if I were to get on) would be difficult as a single parent well established in Ottawa.
  16. Hi Pre Med A little under 3 years ago I applied to Mac was interviewed, got wait listed and did not get in. Two weeks after the news, after starting up a second application to Mac, I met someone special and became pregnant with my first child. The relationship didn't work out but my daughter is wonderful. I am 38, and work full time as a social worker. 13 years of my work has been in community health centres in Toronto and Ottawa, mostly with folks new to Canada, always on inter discplinary teams. My goal is to study family medicine and work in a similar environment. I also have an interest
  17. Great information thanks. I suspect that my undergraduate GPA is well below the cut off and that none of this will matter anyway. But it's good to know! I do understand and speak French so am considering the French stream as an option as well. I need to learn more about it. This forum is helpful!
  18. Hi. "CE" courses are continuing educaiton course? If so, yes. I think I need to read more about the autobio sketch for Ottawa U. My last application was to Mac. I'm new to Ottawa U's application process. I have an appointment to meet with the Admissions's office on Monday to review my pre requisite courses (there are 3 that I would have to take before applying). I'm not sure my current cGPA is high enough for the cut off though to make it likely that I will get invited to interview (3.76 in my undergrad). Which is why I was hoping my autobio sketch would help
  19. Hi there I was employed during my undergraduate and my Masters, yes. But my employment history most relevant to medicine is certainly after I graduated and started working as a social worker full time. I have some part time employment in social worker during my Masters but I'm under the impression that it is undergraduate activities only. During my undergrad I worked part time in retail and other service jobs, not as a social worker. I am hoping that my work history might be considered, at some point. I guess this is not likely. That's unfortunate.
  20. Hi there I am a non-traditional applicant. A social worker with 13 years of experience in community health centres, interested in studying towards family medicine. Recently, reviewing the autobio sketch information on U of O Med's website, I noticed something about only the employment experience during undergraduate years being considered. Most, if not all, of my employment experience with the most relevance to medicine is post graduate (after my Master's degree actually, I have a Masters in Social Work). Is it correct that all of that employment experience will not be considered as part of m
  21. Sorry! Meant to put this in the Waitlist thread. My bad!
  22. Hi folks! I received this email just now, thought I would share it FYI, Wishing you all the best and hope to meet some of you in future years! -Nikki Dear McMaster Applicant I am writing to let you know that the McMaster MD Class of 2014 is now full. While we do not officially dissolve our wait-list until class start on August 29th, we do not anticipate making further offers. If however, a student who has accepted of offer withdraws their acceptance between now and the start of classes, we will still contact the next person on the wait-list to offer the position.
