Interesting question...I've always found that title to be a bit odd. I don't get how you can be called "Master of Surgery" prior to residency, but I suppose it sounds cooler

For some, I think giving up 2 summers can be a big deal (it would for me at least). We're still quite young so giving up that time/freedom in order to finish a year early is not a clear-cut choice depending on their priorities. Personally, I wouldn't make the decision based on the fact that Mac finishes 1 year earlier.

Apparently you'll need a car eventually anyway, hah.

We found our place on Kijiji. More selection for family-suitable houses. Westdale was convenient, but not really great for kids. We'll be living across the street from a big park.

Considering how cheap Hamilton is, I think it's quite feasible to consider living alone.

Diagnostic radiology subspecialty. If you're ever wondering about what first-entry residencies lead to what areas of practice or subspecialties, that's all available through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons - there's a handy table here.

Accepted off WL to Hamilton today. Time stamp: 3:53pm
    cGPA: ~3.90
    Vr: 10
CASPER: felt like my ability to type fast gave me an edge to type more of my thoughts and I made sure to answer all questions per section rather than making each answer as perfect as possible.
Current Year: 1 year post graduation from undergrad
Interview: felt good about most stations except 2-3. I think confidence was a strength for me.

    Great post!

The problem with being analytical about time off is that 2 summers vs. 1 year as simply not equivalent. It's not like you can take the 1 year after graduation off to do whatever you want. I personally would value the 2 summers much more since it will allow time to travel for extended periods of time rather than graduating 1 year early to do a job that I'd be doing for the the next 30-35 years anyways. Just my personal preference though.

Definitely a good chunk of them before the 2 week deadline. I got my offer 15 days after initial offers came out and I'm pretty sure it was the 4th or 5th wave of offers that had come out. IIRC, there was one day where 2 waves of offers came out and I think it was to help any people holding on until the last day to make a decision.

It's funny how it works. When you get in, you're like "oh well...I guess that screw-up wasn't too bad". But when you get rejected, you're thinking "shit...I knew that 1 station would've killed me".

I agree, go by yourself! It's a lot of fun that way anyways.

If you stay in hostels, you will definitely meet people without trying. If you go to Europe, every major city has walking tours you can go on, which is a great way to hit up major landmarks and people in the group will chat with you.

There will be other people travelling by themselves as well. Lots of Australian and UK kids take long trips on their own. Staying in a hostel is great because the close quarters make it almost strange not to talk to the people around you (unlike in hotels where people keep to themselves more).

You might end up spending a night here or there in a hostel where people keep to themselves, but generally there will be people around who will want to grab something to eat for dinner or hang out or grab a drink (in the hostel or somewhere else).

Like medmom said, you will meet friends. But you don't even need to meet people who you will end up travelling with, you can find new people everyday.

Go anyway! If you stay in hostels or have a loose itinerary you might make new friends and travel buddies! I travelled through France and Spain with an ex-marine I met, and on the ferry between Barcelona and Rome I shared a room with a girl who hooked me up with a room in her parents' hotel on the coast for a major discount.

Gonna check my email on my private jet. Depending on the final result, I'll ask the pilot to direct it either to Paris or The Gulag.
