The short answer is, it probably doesn't matter. Both seem like good opportunities that will provide good personal experiences that could contribute to a well-rounded medical school application. What is more important is which option you are more passionate about and are more interested in doing.
I have reviewed applications for medical schools and served on interview committees and to be completely honest, I have yet to be impressed by any single applicants research or clinical volunteering experience. Clinical volunteering and research are great to show your interest in the field of medicine, and commitment to scholarly activity, but I don't think either makes an application particularly strong on its own merit (i.e. shadowing a cardiologist for a few days is great, but won't make you a better medical student or doctor than the next candidate, and being able to run a PCR in a wet lab is great, but won't make you a better medical student or doctor than the next candidate either).
You need to pursue activities that will help you develop into a mature, well rounded person by improving your ability to work in teams, show leadership and communication skills, and overcome challenges and adversity. Either one of these options has that potential, but its all about how you learn from the experience and portray that on your application. Alone, either activity can be very impressive, or not impressive at all. Do whatever you want to do more so you can speak honestly about the experience and the skills you've gained from it.

Although I don't think Montreal is best for you, you should be aware that "affordability" is not an issue for you - with the LOC you are entitled to set up. You will be able to borrow AND to repay after residency! Many owe over $200,000 and it is not a problem to pay this off from your future earnings.

Bambi got a reaction from Understandable in Gift ideas for a physician who helped me with application/interview?
The best gift you can give is a sincere thank you and keeping this physician informed of your progress over the years. We all pay forward to some degree and you are lucky to have had such support. This physician expects nothing from you other than sincere appreciation and watching your development into a competent physician in the years ahead.

You will likely do better at Queen's from what you say, and I would learn to be adaptable to this new environment which, at present and from a distance, you seem not to look forward to. Adaptability is an essential quality for advancement and let this new experience be a test and challenge for you. Good luck!

Bambi reacted to anbessa21 in Asking for CaRMS reference letters in rotations with multiple preceptors
I won't speak as to whether or not they frankly dislike you, but what I will say is that after such a degree of time investment and (presumably) personal familiarity, for them to flat out decline your request with no effort or offering to solicit opinions from their colleagues with whom you've also worked with.... doesn't necessarily bode well. I would abandon them as a potential letter writer. I'd say focus on developing great impressions with other staff clinically who can speak to your suitability come carms time. In my opinion, if it is not offered, or a resounding yes, then on to the next one. This past match, I've seen a few otherwise strong apps crash and burn solely on the basis of a single poor letter.
In the future, when working with multiple staff, ask the one who you feel you performed best with/developed the most rapport with and ask for them to write a STRONG letter in support of your application. In addition, acknowledge that your time together may have been somewhat limited due to the multiple preceptorship model of the rotation, but add that you can provide them with a CV, and a list of staff/residents that you worked with during the rotation who might be able to shed more light on your strengths/performance to contribute to said letter.
