References not submitted on time
lab2185 replied to mdapp's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
This is not the time to be shy. I would do everything in your power to get ahold of them even if that means tracking down a prof at the university or calling office and leaving multiple messages. In the meantime, if you really don't think they will submit contact another reference right away and explain. They still have time to submit. -
How do they look at MCAT scores?
lab2185 replied to Luna Lovegood's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
I can say after having interviewed two years and been rejected with above average both times... that MCAT definitely plays a large role post interview. You can see by looking at the stats that the average was 515 last year. I too was under the impression that it didn't matter. But unfortunately it does. The only way I can see how it might not matter is if the break down that someone provided above is correct and you have very strong marks and a very strong interview than it may be possible for it a bad score to be overcome. -
May 12Th Support Thread
lab2185 replied to kol26's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
If you look at their blog and go back to last year, they do have a post about typical waitlist questions, and it will answer most of the points that people are bringing up. But basically, YES and YES -

You can't switch sites. But if you get like your third choice, you are put on the waitlist for first and second choices, so you could end up getting bumped up once the waitlist moved if that makes sense. The only way you can "switch" is if you get offered NOT your first choice, you can choose to accept that choice and be taken off waistlist for other choices. -

Need advice, mistake on apps
lab2185 replied to cas1234's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
At this point you already got the interview, so I think they are in their final reviews. You can notify the verifier and send the email which you already did. That's all you can do! -
I would say around Cambie or Main street area. Or basically anywhere that is close to broadway where you can grab the 99 bus, as that goes straight to UBC. I know some classes are at VGH so Cambie or Main is also quite close to the hospital

Post Interview Evaluation
lab2185 replied to yych208's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
Nobody knows what they take into account post interview so it is very hard to answer whether they take NAQ into account, for example. But yes, there will be some people who get in with lower GPA/MCATs. -

Has anyone email admissions to ask what the official release date is? -
Post Interview Support Thread
lab2185 replied to hopefulgirl123's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
Ya where are people getting May 10 from? I believe that is the Ontario med school release date but I haven't heard anything about that day for UBC... Has anyone had that confirmed? I also just want to reiterate what everyone else has says that you can never really tell, and that they look at other factors besides interview so there is no point in beating yourself up if you felt certain stations didn't go well because it doesn't really mean anything. -
Ubc Post-Interview Feelings
lab2185 replied to textbook88's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
Also keep in mind it is not just the interview that counts.... There are people not getting accepted with above average interviews and people getting in likely with not above average interviews. So it is sort of impossible to gage as they look at everything. -
Question About English Prereq
lab2185 replied to mr.smith's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
I would do your best in case you are not accepted and reapply, then this mark would be included in your GPA the following cycle. Also, since it is a pre-req nobody really knows if admissions will look particularly closely at these marks post-interview, as it is part of the 'holistic review' -
Applicant Feedback Survey
lab2185 replied to inception12's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
Ya I haven't gotten anything either? I will check with admissions.. -
So, in terms of the science courses. That would be a concern, I would think. But if you kill the MCAT, it might be ok. You might consider taking a (or a few) biology or anatomy/physiology classes online and doing really well in those to show you can do well in sciences, as your grades in those classes might be a concern for admissions I would think. I would look at TRU or Athabasca. The other thing is... so to land an interview it is 50 percent grades and 50 percent volunteer/work experience. You will obviously do quite well on the grades part, but if you look at the forum, unless you hav

Can anyone also confirm whether they look at your grades from the current year when making decisions after interviews? I read somewhere that they only recalculate your average if you get in, but can't seem to find it. But does anyone know if they would look at the current grades post interview when making decisions?

English Prereq Tru Or Athabasca?
lab2185 replied to amoserlie's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
I have taken science courses at either and found them both to be good. I would just look up the courses and see what the mark breakdown is and what your prefer. The only thing I would say is that Athabasca is very expensive in comparison! -
Need To Resubmit Reference Letters?
lab2185 replied to g4m3r2's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
But can you use the same referees as last year? I assume yes. -
Hot Topics To Be Familiar With In Bc?
lab2185 replied to Synesthesia's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
I would read up on current events that also aren't medical, as they can really ask anything. Off the top of my head... in the news ... the Vancouver School Board issues and housing crisis and the new tax for foreign buyers might be something to read up on. -
Community Service Referee
lab2185 replied to hoomans's topic in University of British Columbia Medical School
Congrats on the interview! Your community reference doesnt have to be from a hospital position! You can ask anyone basically that you have done volunteer work with in the community. Look over your app, and pick someone else from the other volunteer activities you did! If you got an interview, I am sure you have quiet a good selection of things to choose from! Also, it is unlikely they would get contacted. They usually just write a letter, unless it has changed from last year. But yes, of course they need to know you well and be able to write a strong letter.
