5th time the charm reacted to PeterPatting in UofT Interview Invites/Regrets 2018
    TIME STAMP: March 20 @ 4:47pm
Result: Invite (absolute insanity....just absolute insanity....)
    Interview date: April 8
    wGPA: 3.87
MCAT: met cutoffs but JUST barely (overall score is nothing impressive at all)
ECs: Lots of music stuff (RCM for piano at high level, played music/led a band for my youth group for 5+ years, self-taught guitar, song writing but tbh nothing really to show for it). Majored in an allied health profession in undergrad so really tried to incorporate my clinical experiences as much as I could. ZERO research...zilch...nada...nothing. Thought for sure that would make me dead on arrival (in combination with my sub-par wGPA). Had a bit of typical premed stuff - hospital volunteering, tutoring etc... Also tried to include some of my hobbies - stuff you would NEVER expect to see on a professional application lol. When I showed my app to a friend he said "Bro are you sure you want to include that?" I literally tossed them in there because (1) Yes I'm passionate about them (2) I thought there was no way I'd get interviewed so might as well show "all of me."
tl;dr - BELOW average imo (but I guess not the adcom's opinion lol)
Essays: Spent way too many days thinking about them and not enough days writing them. In the end I'd say I was moderately content with them - some more than others.
    Year: 1 year post undergrad
    Geography: IP

I cannot believe I got an interview. I really can't. I know its an interview and not an acceptance but still. I worked myself to death in undergrad and ended up still being (imo) no where near competitive for Canadian medical school admissions. So much self-doubt. So so so much of it. And yet here I am.

I only applied to Mac. In 5 years of applying the last 4 I received interviews, I was never wait listed and was accepted my last attempt. Best experience of my life and I am so grateful to have been selected in an ever increasingly competitive applicant pool.

well not exactly tastefully stated by a long shot there is a very good reason to care, and actually it is one of those times when it doesn't matter if you are for maximizing your income or maximizing benefit to you patients (to take a polar opposite approach).
It is extremely short sighted because shockingly relatively quickly it gets noticed and then it is in the papers etc. Now the college is going to investigate because they have little choice and if you are that doctor you better hope they don't find anything in any way biased. If they do then good luck because you are going to need it. Once you are even investigated then you are going to have a hard time being an expert witness as the other side has a great and permanent way to attack you and make you useless. You won't have many friends after that. You won't be welcomed back with open arms anywhere either as you are both out of practice for awhile and again have been investigated. Now what? You just killed the golden goose.
The college is repeatedly in the news with regards to not chasing after doctors doing questionable things - if for no other reason than to protect itself it is becoming more aggressive. They don't like bad publicity.
The one way to eventually get squashed in medicine is being too greedy.
and then there really is that little thing about actually helping your patients ha.

I think when writing your NAQs, it's best to tell them what you did because that's what they're most interested in. I'm happy to read over anybody's NAQ entries if they want a second eye!

don't give up if this is what you want - it is easy to get discouraged especially when you are all so competitive to get in  and have to deal with this wait....

This just in...  our esteemed colleague, HappyAndHopeful, decided today to accept her offer to UofO and thus has freed up a highly coveted waitlist spot!

Random thought: this is kind of like Survivor... except we're all trying to get ON to the island.

Anyway, congratulations to HappyAndHopeful, whose happiness and hope (as well as, I imagine, intelligence, hard work, and amiable personality) gave her the luxury of choosing between two offers (can't even imagine how sweet that must be).

Have a good long weekend everyone.  Try and get out and enjoy life's simple pleasures.  That's a lesson I've learned through this struggle - whether I get into med school or not, slowing down and enjoying life is something that I need to do more often.  Yesterday I went for a walk along the river and saw some baby ducklings that were so small they could've fit in the palm of my hand - ADORBS.

I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for you all.  Many of you have reached out to me over the past application cycle but over the past week in particular.

I have been trying to steer away from premed101 the past few days as I try and get my head right.  I will be completely honest with you: although I try and post positive things for all of our benefit, I am still a human being and have had some pretty rock bottom moments over the past few days.

Your kind messages of support really do help.  Thank you for continually motivating me to try my very hardest to remain hopeful and positive. It would be an honour to attend NOSM alongside you.

Hi fellow waitlisters.  It is I, rural_roots, five-time legend of the waitlist.  Well it has been a tough morning of disappointment and a few tears, but ultimately my rational mind is telling me there is still hope and I need to try my very best to stay positive.

I looked at my post from the waitlist support thread last year and the points I made still apply now and to all of us, so I have pasted them here:

    1. Not knowing where I am on this waitlist means that there is still hope.  Hell, I could be #1 for all I know.  Therefore, DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE.

    2. Not knowing where I am on this waitlist means I am incredibly dependent on premed101 for any information that can be at all helpful.  Therefore, Waitlist thread CREATED.

    3. Waitlisters, and in particular LURKERS on here who have never posted on premed101 and have been waitlisted:  WELCOME! PLEASE POST!

Hang in there everybody.  I'm going to try and go for a swim and sauna today as those things make me happy.  I think time away from all of this even for a couple hours is going to be helpful.

    Result: Accepted!!!
    Time-stamp: 7:05 AM
    wGPA: 3.96 (cGPA 3.92)
    Stream: English
    Geography: IP

ECs: So many varied non-traditional experiences...
    Mother of four.

Current year: Graduated in 2016, took additional prerequisites part time this year.

Interview: Mixed feelings. Felt really good about some questions. There were two questions where I kept worrying about the little things I wish I hadn't said that have been replaying in my mind, and the things I wish I'd added in.

Ecstatic to be offered a spot! I am still in a state of disbelief. I will post a more detailed story of my journey to medical school in the non-traditional forum.
For any other non-traditional applicants dreaming of medical school, keep pursuing your dreams. With a lot of hard work, determination, and an unwavering passion for medicine, it can be done.

    Time Stamp: 8:38 am EDT
    Accepted/Waitlisted/Regrets: Accepted
    GPA: 3.79 + MSc(PT) = 3.99
ECs: Grew up in ++rural and remote NWO community. New grad PT in neuro rehab; Campus EMS (4 years); coached hockey, soccer, and baseball for kids in my home community; substitute teacher and EA (in super rural NWO you don't have to be a teacher to get part-time substitute work); volunteered in local private physio clinic (1 year); undergrad research project (nothing published or particularly rigorous) and physio school research project (qualitative research - again nothing substantial or published); first aid instructor in my home community in NWO; and NWO placement and academic unit through NOSM while in physio school. Perhaps more, but those are the main ones I remember without referring to my application.
Decision (will you accept your offer)? Already got on SAM on the OMSAS site and hit "firm accept"
    Campus: West

Fifth application over a six year period since 2012. I won't go on about how happy I am to get in because I've been rejected post-interview 4 times, and I know how it stings to read those. Was #26 on the 2013 wait-list (when they still ranked us) and got flat out post-interview rejected every other year until now. If you really want to go to NOSM, do what you need to do to make it happen. For me, it was starting another health care career and finding a passion for rehabilitation and how medicine can help. If you want this to happen, find a way to make it so. Easier said than done, I know. But you can do it if you really want it!

    Accepted - Hamilton Campus
    Timestamp: 8:29am
    cGPA: 3.87
    CARS: 127
Casper: Felt very good about it, considering this year I got to complete the whole test.
Interview: Thought it went well, a few stations were rough (especially the acting scenario). Overall left with a good feeling.
    IP, 2nd year MSc

After 3 years and lots of patience, I can finally say I've achieved my dream. Honestly, this has been a gruelling journey and one that has really taught me so much, most importantly to believe in myself. For anyone out there that's feeling disappointed around this time of year, know that you're capable and that for some of us it's just testing our patience that much more. Believe in yourself, because if this is truly what you want, it will work out! I'm a strong believer in paying it forward and I wouldn't be here without support from friends/family that are in/have gone to medical school. If you have any questions or want to chat, feel free to PM me. Good luck!
