  3. Thank you for offering advice! I have a few questions about study equipment/study style. Firstly, what type of laptops do most people at UBC use, and do they bring them to class? Secondly, is it a viable strategy to take all lecture notes by hand? Throughout my UG I found the best approach for me was simply to frantically write out notes, and I'm curious if people still do that in med school.
  4. This is my second time applying, and interviewing, for med school at UBC. It feels good to finally post this! Result: Accepted at Island Medical Program Early or Regular Deadline: Regular AGPA: 93-94% MCAT: 526 Year: Finished undergrad in April 2018, working since. ECs: Pretty decent. 700+ hours of hospital volunteering, 4 different jobs, several research projects, and a smattering of other volunteering and leadership positions. Geography: IP Interview: I felt like I had a very good rapport with 3 or 4 of the interviewers and was actually able to smile, laugh an

  6. Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but same! (March 3, 12pm, looking to switch to March 23)
  7. Due to other interviews, the only possible spot for me to do this interview was on the 23rd, and the system didn't log me in until they were all booked. If anyone wants to trade a time on the 23rd for 9:08 AM on the 2nd, please let me know.
  8. Thanks everyone for the responses. My reference ended up submitting with 30 minutes to spare. I'm thankful that it was submitted on time - I would hate to risk such an important interview based on a missed deadline.
  9. Invite OOP, 2nd time applying 4.00 GPA 526 (130 CARS) Top 10: I felt that they're fairly typical, with a bit of travel and an intense patient experience thrown in for added spice. Similar to last year and generally had above average scores for that round. LOR: I believe they were all good. Last year I missed the cutoff for an interview by <.2 points (Got a 109.65 overall score), with a reference who filled in the form incorrectly and sent a rude email to the admissions committee about their reference format. This year I kept things about the s
  10. Hi all, I'm currently waiting on a reference still, who likes to submit at the last minute. The deadline is February 5, but is this inclusive? E.g., can my reference submit the form ON Feb 5, or is the deadline midnight Feb 4? Please help!
  11. Result: Invite Time Stamp: 9:20 am Interview Date: cGPA: 3.96 Year: graduated UG MCAT: 526 (130 CARS) ECs: Fairly average, lots of research with no pubs, some misc work experience, lots of hospital volunteering, hobbies, etc. Good enough for IP UBC and OOP Alberta Geography: OOP Got rejected last year with the same LORs, GPA, and MCAT, and only added a couple of activities. Pleasantly surprised!
  12. The wording of the email implied that MCAT and GPA are considered only non-competitively. Essentially, that achievement of the cutoffs (3.7, 128) was all that was evaluated, and that review of ABS and references was the main factor. Of course this is only speculation, but the wording of the email strongly suggested that. Luckily, I would have had to cancel this or another interview because of interview conflicts - so my decision was made for me!

Fairly typical ECs, but spent a lot of time writing the aABS and felt pretty good about it. I got an interview at Queen's, so my ECs can't be that bad! Looks like the aABS is very heavily weighted?

  15. Time Stamp: 10:07AM PST Invite/Reject: Invite! GPA: 3.96 CARS: 130 Casper: Lots of prep Geography: OOP I applied last year with a 3.94 GPA and the same CARS and didn't get an interview. I also took the conventional advice of not preparing for the CASPer last year, which worked out poorly. This year I took it much more seriously and practiced with a prep company, which helped a lot. Edit: PM me for information about practice materials
  16. I actually don't believe this is correct; I've been told that you are allowed to bring a blank piece of paper and a pen. It could be quite useful to write down the key points of a scenario before the 5 minute timer starts. It might be worth emailing a CASPer official to confirm this.
  17. Invite! OOP aGPA: ~4.48 MCAT: 526 Rural Was very nervous for this because of the introduction of the CASPer, which I did poorly on last year. I have ~100 WPM typing speed and ended up paying for CASPer practice, which may have helped.
  18. Verifiers are usually just asked to confirm that what you said on your application is true. However, I know of at least one school that asks for evaluations as well, similar to a reference letter. Unfortunately, I would think carefully about including an activity that ended in this way. A verifier who indicates that your personal statement/entry is inaccurate could jeopardize your entire application and cause it to be red flagged. If you have a verifier in mind who you have a good relationship with, it may be worth including this activity. It's up to your personal judgement whether or no
  19. I actually went back and double checked Doing Right's references for this, because it seemed a bit odd. It does look like the Dr. was aware of the card (which was unsigned and undated) when he did the transfusion, because a nurse checked her wallet earlier. I should have clarified that earlier! Also, the woman was unconscious and would have died without the procedure. Still, I think it's interesting that even an unsigned card is considered enough consent to let someone die. 20. Throwing in my 2 cents here. Because the kid is 3 years old, you have a right as a physician to perform life saving treatment. The main issue here is that the child is too young to make a decision for herself, i.e. she is incapable. It's important to discuss this with the family, and discuss the importance of honouring cultural beliefs wherever possible, but in this case, the only really acceptable course of action is to treat the child. According to UWash bioethics (this is a similar case about bacterial meningitis): "The physician has a duty to challenge the decision of parent
