    Result: Invite
    GPA: 3.57
    MCAT: 502 (CPBS 125, CARS 125, BBFL 126, PSBB 126)
Current Degree: Open studies at UofC to upgrade my GPA. I have a BSc (Honours Chemistry), and MSc (Organic Chemistry).
    Geography (IP/OOP): IP
Extracurricular Activities (awards, achievements, volunteering, employment, research, etc.): This is a long list as I am an older applicant (29 years old). Awards include scholarships, awards for oral presentations at conferences, and athletic awards. Achievements include degrees, publications, and a promotion in a professional setting. Volunteering includes in-hospital and community-based volunteering. Employment includes teaching assistant (as a grad student), and work in the pharmaceutical industry. Research includes my BSc and MSc research and 4 publications.
CASPer: I felt that it went very well. I did not prepare other than searching online and asking people that have taken it before. I was open and honest with my answers and focused on what was important for each scenario (for example a patient).

    GPA: 3.72
    MCAT: 507
    Current Degree: BScN 2016
    Geography (IP/OOP):  IP
Extracurricular Activities (awards, achievements, volunteering, employment, research, etc.): critical care nursing experience (ongoing), other medical/non medical employment history, major volunteer role with an agency serving vulnerable populations, Involved in various community initiatives/active committees, volunteer with a child protection center, only left one entry blank. My ECs are all things I’m very passionate about and spend quite a bit of time with. I had additional leadership entries from roles at work, volunteering, etc. Included a few hobbies that I love as well. I thought my ECs were strong but I guess I’ll find out at the end of March
CASPer: First time doing it, felt rushed but not too bad. Kind of hard to tell how it went, as I blinked and it was over.

I’m disappointed to have not received an invite, as the UofA is my top choice. However, this year just isn’t my time and that’s okay  I’m going to reflect on this application cycle and reevaluate how I could approach next year. I’m also going to rewrite the MCAT to see if I can make my score a bit more competitive. Congrats to everyone who got invites this year and best of luck in your interviews!

AlteplaseStat reacted to propofolsquad in To successful applicants - how many times did you apply?
    1) 3 times. One year, I couldn't even submit an application I'd been working on because my MCAT was soo bad. I've been rejected by Calgary without an interview every time I applied.
    2) 3.7, and highlights... rural kid, nursing in the ER, told stories about being outside and being at work. I have no research experience and no really interesting awards etc so I must have told some really good stories about hiking and resuscitating. (or the right person saw them).
    As for encouragement:
DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY. It is so hard to put your heart and soul into an application, spend all that time waiting and then be rejected. I've experienced it and it took a long time for me to come to terms with the fact that it wasn't me not being good enough. The right person has to see your application at the right time for it to shine and it's mostly luck.
KEEP APPLYING. Seriously. Keep applying. The years will pass anyway and if it is where you are meant to be you'll end up in medical school. It is a grind. You can do it.
DEVELOP SOME REALLY GOOD COPING SKILLS AND GENUINELY CARE ABOUT YOURSELF. In the mean time, work on developing who you are as a person, focus on your self care and invest in your personal relationships because medical school takes a toll on your home life. And you want to be ready for when you get here.
    Good luck everyone

    Result: INVITE!
    GPA: 3.62
    MCAT: 506 (126, 124, 125, 131). Re-wrote this year and scored 499 LOL! No science background.
    Current Degree: BScN 2017
    Geography (IP/OOP): IP
Extracurricular Activities: Full-time health officer in department of public safety; Paediatric case management, pharmaceutical trials; Clinic lead for workplace health clinics. 5+ years community outreach work with vulnerable populations, heavy involvement with fitness industry and started school initiatives/ clubs, coaching. Long term experience abroad. Other random self-taught creative hobbies. Zero research. Wrote about personal challenges candidly in my personal essays. My experiences are all closely related and paint a clear picture of my values.
CASPer: Felt it went well. Most of the scenarios I've encountered in real life, so I really enjoyed the exam.
Second time applying, first invite, and I am still in SHOCK that I got an interview after being rejected pre-interview from Calgary. I sat in my car crying today lol. I believe my personal activities were my saving grace given my horrendous GPA and MCAT score. Last year, I scored above interview average in ECs. I made big strides to strengthen my application this cycle. The MCAT didn't work out, and I was expected to be rejected pre-interview. Was planning on ditching the MCAT and focus on my current career going forward. Feeling incredibly blessed to be offered this opportunity to show who I am. Excited to meet everyone on interview day!

ECs: Varied. Long-term sport and instrument, volunteering, clubs (personal interest, not catered towards med), leadership (small groups), long-term continuous research but across multiple positions.
    Year: 1st year Masters
Geography: IP   Interesting, seems like they really did tone down the weighting for cGPA. Did not expect this at all, 1st interview ever in 4 cycles of applications . The essay must have helped a lot too since imo my ECs are average at best, if not subpar.

Depends on the institution you are applying to! For example, UofA uses standardized questions and will not accept any reference "letters" if submitted. You would have to check with each institution, basically!

Interview: I found 2-3 of the MMI stations pretty challenging (just not much to say). Felt like the panel went really well. This is my first time applying. Very humbled by the offer but I've decided to go with U of C. All the best to everyone!
