Got off Mac's PT waitlist today!! I received the email around 4pm

Colby1373 got a reaction from PTPTPT in McMaster PT Waitlist
I accepted Mac PT in the first round. I have heard of no waitlist movement and the class list stands at 56 (You can see the list on Mac's Avenue to Learn). If the class is normally 65, why has no one been called??? I have several friends high up on the waitlist waiting to hear. Has anyone heard of them decreasing the class size this year?

I'm honestly not expecting an offer anymore (I'm also pretty high on the waitlist). I sent them an email 2 days ago asking if there was any waitlist movement and they replied "We have not released additional offers, so it is unlikely that you will hear from us, unfortunately" and then proceeded to encourage me to apply again next year. Not sure if that's their way to reject people on the waitlist nicely, or they're just fed up with me sending weekly emails, lol.

I will be. I'm just debating if I should wait a bit to see if I get off the waitlist for Western. The more I think about it though the more I think Mac is for me. Have you accepted yours?

Maybe I’ll be the bad guy for this, but is anyone else getting a tad bit irritated by how much this thread is being dedicated to just one school? This thread is meant to be a place for all schools and it sucks that it gets spammed with dozens of pages that we have to read through in case there’s anything relevant to everyone. Not saying to not discuss it here at all, but 80% of this thread is about McMaster rn- I know for individual schools there’s separate threads. Idk I think it may be worth moving some discussions there so this remains a place for general OMSAS applicants.

Regarding McMaster, I know that a lot of people are saying that anyone in the top 550 can be a good physician and is well qualified to do so, but I want to argue this point.
Just because someone has a high GPA, CARS, and/or CASPer, does that really make them a good physician? People are arguing that out of the 550 interviewees, it doesn't matter who you pick because they are all great candidates, but I disagree. I think it does matter who you pick for your class among the 550 interviewees. Great numbers do not = great physician.
Mac doesn't look at ABS. Mac doesn't look at references. I don't think Mac actually knows who you are as a person before interviews. Yes, there will be many good, qualified people amongst the 550 interviewees, but there will also be some bad apples. And when Mac uses a lottery to select its class, you will inevitably have some bad apples slipping through and gaining offers they might otherwise not have through an MMI process.
Yes, I know that MMIs aren't perfect and that they have their own flaws. I know that people can practice for them and become good at them, but I still think that they are better than nothing. I firmly believe that selecting physicians without speaking to them, either online or in-person, is not the way to go.
Anyways, my point is that justifying a lottery system with the argument "anyone in the top 550 would make a good physician" is not right. Again, great numbers do not = great physician. I do not believe that everyone in the top 550 would make a good physician.

I'm not a Mac applicant but I strongly disagree with this. Medical schools DO owe you fair and merit-based processing of your admission application, because they are publicly-funded institutions. They are free to choose their selection method, but within broad lines of equity, fairness and merit. And yes you are indeed entitled to be treated fairly and with justice throughout the process. So, yeah med schools are obligated to defend their selection procedures in front of media/justice systems and prove that it is fair to everyone,. The fact that you can sue them (even if you won't) means that they have an obligation yeah.

M1 from another school popping in here, hope everyone's hanging in there given everything going on!
I sincerely feel for everyone waiting to hear back from Mac, and I can understand any frustration you might have. I interviewed at Mac 3 times before getting in, and if I were in your position I would be angry and upset and everything in between. I don’t think the situation was handled very well by McMaster, personally I think they should’ve at least tried to do an online MMI or something like the other schools did.
To me, their approach almost seems they’re taking their “evidence-based” selection process to the logical extreme. They invented and supposedly validated the MMI process, so apart from that they don’t have a lot of recent data on other approaches to selection. It seems like they were faced with the problem of how to select for a population of students comparable to previous years without having the MMI, and landed on their top-100 + lottery method. They probably found that in previous years, the top 100 was the approximate threshold for 70ish% acceptance rate, and arbitrarily used that number as the cutoff. As for the lottery, the only way I can rationalize that is if they considered it impossible to otherwise identify the applicants that would’ve shined in the MMI enough to push their score up, and figured that a lottery is a “fair” way to guarantee a certain percentage of those people in the class.
From a purely mathematical standpoint, I can rationalize the above thought process, but just like in medicine it's not all about the numbers and I feel like the lack of effort in arranging alternatives really showed a lack of sensitivity and disregard for the important, human aspects of medicine.

There won't be any studies on this.  The variance in medical school applicants isn't as large as pre-meds like to believe. Most people aren't special unfortunately!  Despite what people will tell themselves, alot of getting into medical school - after all the hard work, dedication, and strategy - is dependent on luck as well. There are plenty of people with strong GPA/MCAT/ and seemingly adequate social skills for an interview, that simply dont get in, depending on what province/program you are applying to/eligible for. Too many qualified applicants, not enough spots.

Not to mention this is just the first step... there is even more significant variability when it comes to applying to residency - where there is no MCAT, no GPA, no Casper(well, a few schools use it, but not across the board or even in a significant fashion)  that helps filter to get to the interview stage. Even more opacity and luck, with general guidelines of how to "improve and be more competitive" but of course most medical students like pre-meds arent just throwing apps in for giggles.

Exactly. I always thought of their "working with colleagues across Canada" was more about having input on deciding their criteria. In the very slim chance that they do take into consideration who has multiple offers, they definitely would not purposely give offers to those without other offers. If anything, they'd give offers to those WITH multiple offers since they are more guaranteed to be strong candidates. I absolutely agree that most who received an interview can probably get in if they persevere and reapply/will make great physicians, but that's not the point. This is about Mac's credibility and reputation. What would it say about Mac if, while other schools are putting in tons of effort to ensure they select the best candidates possible, Mac is choosing candidates that don't have other offers (or using a lottery system)?

And I also think that they used a lottery system to select offers. Wish I was trolling, but I really think they did!

Regardless of what happens, be proud of yourselves. You have all worked so hard to get here; you cannot be blamed for being anxious and even neurotic at times. It’s normal to feel stressed during these times. Don’t let others put you down, or question your character because of how  you are feeling. But remember that even if things don’t work out this cycle, you will find a way in life. Tell yourself that. I am ready for a rejection. I have been rejected the past 2 years and I’m still here, staying hopeful. I will be upset if I am rejected again, but I will not give up. I will find a way, and so will you. I wish the best of luck to all of us on May 12th.
