Regrets after waitlist today as an IP applicant. Also above avg interview and 75th-100th NAQ. My score pre-interview overlapped with the OOP cutoff. Rough! They must really weight GPA. Turns out GPA conversion from going to school abroad really did put the nail in the coffin for me, which is a shame.

This was my last UBC cycle as my MCAT expired this year. Best of luck to y'all in the future!

What was your GPA if you’re comfortable sharing?

Regrets after waitlist email. Above average interview and 75-100th percentile NAQ. Interesting...

Wow that was a LONNGG summer. I am grateful that I already have acceptance (and started) at a US school this summer. It all works out for the best after all. Just put in the work guys and do not be discouraged.

Interesting.. above average interview and NAQ. Was the problem with GPA or MCAT you think?

  3. Im assuming your an IP applicant. With an 84% GPA, it will be very difficult to secure an interview. You need to have perfect ECs, so the way you write your descriptions will be EXTREMELY important.

MCAT isn’t looked at until after the interview so improving the MCAT wouldn’t increase your chances of getting an interview.

if you need some help with your ECs, I wouldn’t mind reading over your descriptions and offering some tips.

I am on the same boat. I have a 510 MCAT. Last year I got interview but didn't get offer. My interview was below average so I knew i had to put more efforts on interview instead. I guess you can wait till next year and see how your interview goes. if it is above average and no offer I guess it is time to try to improve MCAT. Just my two cents, could be wrong.

What were your stats if you dont mind me asking?

Hey everyone, just wanted get some second opinions on my situation and why I decided to submit an academic explanations essay regarding my MCAT scores for this upcoming cycle.
    wGPA: 3.87 cGPA: 3.83 MCAT: 506
ECs: education outreach, highschool and university tutor, research assistant, student government, sports, scholarships and research awards. I also have a lot of clinical experience since I am currently in a 2nd entry nursing program

I wrote the MCAT for the first time back 2018 during my third year of undergraduate studies and didn't do that great (498). To learn from this attempt, I decided to create a study plan designed to target areas of the exam I needed to improve upon and booked another test for August 2019, a year following my graduation. Unfortunately, once I started studying in March of 2019 my parents went through a nasty divorce. The divorce led to my father to leaving the house which left my mother and I in a dire financial crisis (both my parents are first generation immigrants and do not work well paying jobs). In order to help my mother make ends meet and avoid eviction from our house I decided to step up and work full time (50 hour weeks) while balancing my preparation for the MCAT. Upon receiving my results for the second attempt I got a 506 overall, which was an eight point improvement over my original score but unfortunately got a 123 in CARS, just one point shy from the UofT cut off. Honestly, between dealing with the logistics of the divorce, studying for the MCAT and working 10 hour shifts daily, I felt extremely stressed and stretched thin which impacted my preparation for the exam. I decided to submit the academic explanations essays because I believe these unforeseen and difficult circumstances impacted my ability to truly excel in my second attempt.

Does anyone know if UofT will consider my situation? I am able to prove all of these circumstances with documentation. It would suck to not be considered at all just because of one point and terrible

You already created a potential issue should this wrong verifier be contacted. Therefore, in my view, to mitigate potential damage, it would be smart not damaging to let adcoms know. This approach can help, not harm.

Well luckily the verifiers that I mixed up are still able to verify the content of the essay. I would just prefer it to be the original people that I intended.

I’m not trying to add new information to my app, I simply need to change a (13) to (6) instead on my essay so that it corresponds to the correct person on my verifier list. Not sure if this is a huge red flag or not.

Hello!  Sorry that you did not meet the cutoff for CARS and that you will not get any feedback from a file review by UBC -- however, keep going and you will get there!  I am a re-applicant and a re-taker of the MCAT and received a 128 in CARS, which was the lowest section of my MCAT score, but somehow was in the 90th percentile for the CARS section on that test day (and I am assuming that we took the MCAT on the same day as I also got my MCAT scores back today!) -- this is just to say that perhaps it was an extra tough CARS section if you will be attempting to write the MCAT again!

    Weird flex but ok

It’s definitely possible to get in with a lower MCAT score and lower GPA. Had a friend get in a few years ago with an MCAT score below 508 and gpa below 85%. She had stellar ECs and, I assume, an above average interview though. She was a first time applicant and got her first choice campus. So it’s definitely possible!

Previous years it was for sure common to get accepted with a lower MCAT score such as <510, but now it seems that the scores have become so much more competitive. I haven’t seen anyone say that they were accepted with an MCAT score below 510 other than the one person in this thread.

Buy books of practice questions for CARS (any ones that are for the old "Verbal Reasoning" section are the same as well). The ExamKrackers method of approaching this section is solid in my opinion (they sell books as well). No gimmicks just do one really good thorough read so you really get the entirety of the reading blurb and then go through each question in order. You waste less time that way then with other prep companies' methods. I think just practicing the actual test format will be the fastest way to improve. An English class like one where you read short stories or novels would certainly help if you feel quite disadvantaged and have lots of time to prep and the room in your course schedule. See how you do on a practice CARS section though and that will give you a good idea of where you're starting from.

Any chance you can provide me a link for the EK book you are talking about? I would like to purchase it. I heard the older EK CARS books are better than the newer ones?
