Most doctors in Canada are not family doctors. A neurosurgeon is far more prestigious than a family doctor, and is on par with a PhD-level Nobel Prize Winner in terms of respect and net worth. Medicine is a huge field, it heavily depends on what kind of doctor you're talking about.
Nobody does a PhD for money or for bragging rights. It is only for those with passion in the field of which they are studying, and especially fields which REQUIRE doctoral degrees in order to make a decent living (such as neuroscience). A PhD is incredibly detail-specific with very little scope and is intended for strictly research (and professor lecturing) purposes.
In the real world, it's not the people with the highest IQ that make the most money. Those who think in pragmatic terms and get an education which allows them to receive technical skills are thinking in terms of job security and income investment first and foremost. Yeah, if you're Elon Musk you turn into a billionaire, but the average 150 IQ individual is stuck teaching physics at a mid-tier university making no more than $100,000 a year. Western society does not value true intelligence, it values whatever generates the most income.

My waitlist email time stamp was 10:29:29,
I don’t think the timestamp theory is true for Toronto, because almost everyone I know did exactly fall in the alphabetical order sense, sounds very unlikely to be a coincidence, also the number of ppl on u of t wait list is pretty small compared to other schools, so I don’t think those stamps correlate to rank,
    I’m IP
Re the second wave of offers: They send a first wave of waitlist offers, and then if ppl from this wave reject, they send new offers to fill them...
logically and based on posts here and posts from previous years, some ppl will reject their waitlist offers for sure because they have already accepted other offers, therefore I think it’s very likely there will be a couple/few more offers, after that they will will keep a couple of ppl in the waitlist for so long just in case there are last minute cancels (I know ppl who got off Toronto waitlist by end of June or beginning of July),
I hope this helps you guys, I know this is really hard and stressful because I was going through the same thing till just today, so hang in there, and know that even if it doesn’t work this year it’s still a great achievement that you made it to Toronto waitlist, U of T waitlist is really short, which means that you were super close to an acceptance, may be one or two bad interview answers away from that elusive acceptance! So I would say even if it doesn't luck out this year, you will have a great chance next cycle

That's the only information I found too about over-offering on the first round. I came across this pdf that shows that there were 301 offers given for 259 seats for 2018. Not sure if those extra 42 seats are over-offering + waitlist, or just waitlist.

Are we sure that u of t does over offer in the first round? The only information I found about that is from last year, someone mentioned that the admission people confirmed to him over the phone that they do over accept....
Does that mean that U of T waitlist is realistically of very little hope/meaning because technically the first round of offers included an embedded waitlist?

Based on last year’s wait list thread, it seems they send the majority of new offers and rejections after two weeks and only keep a couple of waitlist candidates in case someone of the second wave declines their offer or for example a grad student can’t reach the graduation deadline etc
Those last couple of ppl seem to hear their final decision very late, may be end of June or early July
