I have my heart set on going to medical school and am currently writing the MCAT. However, I didn't have a very good track record at all for the 1st four years of undergrad due to mental health issues (not to make excuses or anything) but I did turn my life around, start taking care of myself and recently graduated after doing a 5th year, ending up with a 3.9 GPA (this is my GPA for the 5th year, not my cumulative GPA). I obviously don't want to do a full year of courses after graduating if it ends up being pointless, but I am willing to do a full year of courses as an unclassified student if if immensely boosts my chances of being competitive for med school. That being said, if I were to do a special year with the requirements of Western and maintain a high GPA, would they assess the 5th year & the special year as my 2 year gpa or am I only able to be assessed on 1 or the other? (Waiting for a reply for my email to the admissions committee.) I also I'm aware of the importance of ECs, it's just the situation surrounding my GPA calculations that I'm most worried about and wanted to discuss in this post.

My university record is not exactly the best thing I can showcase, but I think I'm at a point where I could try harder and actually have a chance to study medicine. Here's my record: 1st year: 77% (27 credits) 2nd year: 82% (28 credits) - 1W ( I took the course again in the 2nd semester) 3rd year: 85.5% (30 credits) 4th year: I'm expecting ~ 89% average (30 credits total, 1W) 5th year: I know what to take for GPA-boosting purposes and will likely reach the early 90s. My AGPA with 1st year taken out as of today is 84.1%, although will likely rise to about 85% once I've finished my second-semester courses. My major EC's: - Volunteered at 3 Labs, 1 lab internship (WorkLearn), I started one last month and will likely continue through my 5th year to get something tangible this time. - Founder of non-profit organization - will continue through 5th year and beyond. - 250 hours of community volunteering (continuing for 1.5 years now and will continue for another 1.5) - Freelance Spanish language tutor (volunteer) since HS. Do you think I should do a 5th year?

I am determined to attend medical school in Canada. Would love any advice regarding the few options I have Currently studying for the MCAT and going into the fourth year of my honours Science undergrad- 1st year GPA 3.21 (technically 4.5 course load, including my initial grade and my improved grade for my 1 repeated course) 2nd year GPA 3.44 3rd year GPA 3.63 I'm assuming these are my options (based on years of obsessive research on forums lmao): 1) Do a 5th year. Attain 3.8+ in year 4 & 5. Apply to Western in my 5th year. If unsuccessful, complete a master's program. Apply again to Western and Queen's (perhaps Ottawa?) Any other schools I would have a chance at? 2) Do a second undergraduate degree and open up doors to other schools. Could do this after completing my degree in four years or after doing the additional 5th year. I am studying hard for the MCAT and would say I have unique ECs. I appreciate any honest insight (optimistic/pessimistic). Thank you in advance!
