Help choosing an undergrad program
Strugglingstudent003 posted a topic in General Premed Discussions
Currently a grade 12 student in Vancouver BC. I’ve applied to Calgary, Toronto and UBC for kin. I’ve been accepted to both Calgary and Toronto but am still waiting for UBC. But at this point I feel like my chances of getting into UBC are pretty slim even though it’s my first choice as admissions is ending soon. My goal is to get into med school one day and I’m hoping for some advice as to which program would give me a better chance to achieve my goal.- 8 replies

So hello premed101! I have been lurking in this forum for quite some time and decided to make an account now that I have gotten accepted into a neuroscience program into ulethbridge for Fall 2021. I was wondering if this program is good to take? I am still waiting on admission updates from U of C or from MRU and Lethbridge was the quickest to accept me so far. I have no clue as to how to prepare to be premed so I am quite in a pickle as of now. I have also seen that ulethbridge also have a pre-proffessional transfer into medicine so I am also wondering if anybody have experience with that sor

Hi everyone I am a grade 11 student in Alberta and I was wondering if there are any research opportunities I can take before I enter undergraduate studies. My desired university is the University of Alberta. Additionally, it would be very helpful if you guys could share any research or health related extracurriculars you guys did in high school. Thanks!

In case you didn't see it yet, here is the UofA mmi video for 2020 As you can see in this video, we work hard but we also like to have a lot of fun too. I can tell you from personal experience that if you are lucky enough to get a spot in the next little while, you will have an awesome time here. The classes feel like one big family and close knit community where we all help each other out..professors I have had, have been knowledgeable, kind and genuinely want to help you succeed. There are so so so many extracurricular, shadowing, and research opportunities no matter what your in

Just wondering what the general consensus is on the available general surgery programs in the country, which are considered “the best” and what are the pros and cons of each?

Hello! I figured a new thread should be started for the 2018 applicants/class of 2022s. Since this is about a month late, I'm sure you all know that the LOI and Pharmacist Consultation Form has been posted for this cycle, but here's the link anyways: https://www.cms.ualberta.ca/pharm/programs/undergraduate-bsc-in-pharmacy/prospective-student/admission-requirements. Best of luck to all, and I (and I'm sure other pharm students will bounce into this thread) am always willing to answer whatever questions I can!

Hi there, I am starting at the University of Alberta in the fall to study Occupational Therapy. I am from Ontario and won't know anyone when I move to Edmonton at the end of August, so I have been looking for a somewhere that current OT students at UofA could tell me what the program is like, or where would be a good area to live in Edmonton - and where other new students looking for roommates could connect. Please comment if you have any advice, or if you will be joining me at the University of Alberta for occupational therapy!

Here is my unusual path to graduation (I don't know if GPA is calculated in the same way over all schools): Year 1: UBC - General Science --- Year 2: Université de Montréal - Neuroscience --- Years 3-5: Université de Montréal - Computer Science --- I would like to apply to medical school after my Master's (most likely ending in 2022), but I'm currently unsure where my best options lie. I realize that currently, my portfolio is not comptetitive. I would like to know if it can be made competitive, without doing a second bachelor's. Should I ai

Hi Everyone, As the MMI comes nearer I was wondering if people who have given it in the past or who are planning to give it can share what their experience was like and what kind of mindset helped them to approach it. Also what makes Alberta's program unique? Why have you applied there (Apart from convenience of location) Andddd... which location have you applied to and why? I look forward to hearing from and engaging with all of you <3 Thanks

I'm thinking about possibly moving to Alberta this year if my interviews don't work out so that I can apply as an in-province applicant. My family seems to think that it would be very beneficial as their cutoffs for in-province applicants are a lot lower than what they have for out of province students. Part of me agrees because then I'd be well above the cutoffs....but it's scary. Would it really be worth it? Would it greatly improve my chances? Has anyone else done something like this before? Has it helped? Just some background, I've got a cGPA for Alberta sitting at 3.86, a 513 MCAT (

Hey there, Just wanted a little insight on Alberta/Edmonton/Calgary as a whole. Being from Toronto, don't have much experience about it other than the fact that its freezing cold lol. How do you like the cities? How is the cost of living, weather, social life/people, activities, enviorment, etc. compared to Toronto/Vancouver. Cheers, Richard

Premed! Are you struggling with your medical school interviews? Have you been previously rejected after the medical school interviews? Do you want to turn your interview rejections into admissions? I get it. When I applied to medical school the first time around, I had 5 interviews, but was rejected by all 5 schools. Sad ad depressed, I was lost how to to turn that around. However, I came up with a specific approach to interviewing for medical schools. Using that same approach, I again had 5 interviews the following year. The difference is that this time, I got into

Hey folks, a quick question. Did you check if all of your verifiers received the UofA email for verification? I asked one of my verifiers, and it seems he has not received it anything yet from UofA. Do all activity verifiers get checked? If so, then does it simply mean that this individual who has not received anything yet will be emailed a bit later? I ask this because all the other verifiers got emailed last week, except perhaps this person. So I'm not sure if I should talk to UofA about it and perhaps tell them to resend the email. (Btw, I am an in-province applicant,

Is there anyone in Toronto who has an interview at UofA and who would like to get together for practice? It would be particularly beneficial if we could get at least one person who's been through this experience at UofA before but this is also a call to all the Edmonton naive (like me).

Hi everyone, I am a Resident at the University of Toronto. I completed MMI interviews across the country (from BC to Ontario). If anyone would like tips/hints on interviews or like to do a practice session, please let me know. I am open to meeting in person in the Toronto area or via Skype. Feel free to send me a direct message.

Hey everyone, I'm currently an Alberta resident going to school at Arizona State University and set to graduate in Spring 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance. I've recently decided to look into the possibility of applying to med school in Alberta since becoming a doctor is something I've always wanted to do but didn't think possible. I haven't really taken any of the pre-reqs (being a business major and all) and have a 3.81 cGPA. I am at ASU as a D1 athlete which is why i never pursued a science undergraduate, and have one year of eligibility left after this to potenti

Hey guys, so I'm IP BC, I've cross posted in UBC thread so hopefully not violating terms by posting here too.... Wondering if I work for 6-8 months rurally within Alberta whether I'd qualify for Alberta residency and rural considerations? If I got Alberta residency, do I get to keep my BC IP one if I'm back in BC and working by April / May next year? I will simultaneously be doing online schoolwork out of BC universities. What would be decent, competitive IP stats for Alberta? How many weeks out of each month, or months out of the year would I be required to
