  1. Hi Everyone Over the past couple of years I have religiously scrolled through Premed101 with so many doubts in my head; coming across posts that gave me confidence and others that tore it down. After years of hard work, I have finally made that cumbersome leap from a premed to a med student (Bumblebee Class of 2024). I'm still in disbelief that I made it and hope I never lose this feeling. I've found myself reflecting on my journey thus far (thank you Covid19 for all the time) and have come to realize that perseverance and hard work were the stars in my story when everyone and everything around me told me I wasn't good enough. With about a month left before I finally embark on this next chapter of my story, I wanted to use my time to help any of you out there that feel lost, scared, or unsure. As someone that didn't have any mentors on my path to medicine, I think I would've benefited from talking to someone that had gone through the process. Please feel free to message me with any questions you have about Canadian, US, or International medical school admissions or even if you need a friend to vent it all out As a disclaimer, I'm not affiliated with any company/school and will probably not have all the answers, but I can try to give you my thoughts/advice from my own experiences. I'll be here for you if you need it
  2. Hello wonderful people! I just finished my 4th year at a University in Canada - I'm a Canadian citizen, and I am currently planning to do my 5th year to boost my GPA and build up my ECs. I am almost done with my primary application for AACOMAS (DO schools), but I am a little hesitant to apply for AMCAS as well. Given that my stats are 3.65 cGPA with a strong upward trend (3.2 - 3.7 - 3.7 - 4.0) and 508 MCAT (127 125 127 129), should I give it a shot for US MD schools for this cycle? I am just worried because I heard US schools don't like to see reapplicants, so I was wondering if it would be better to wait and apply next cycle with a better GPA and a new MCAT score as a first time applicant. (I am rewriting my MCAT in September for Canadian schools, and I'm not going to declare that on my US applications to avoid any delays) I'm not really sure of my chances in the States as a Canadian student. [my EC: 2 clinical research experiences - one paid, one volunteer - with a publication, hospital volunteering for a year, international student training at a hospital, shadowing, executive positions at 2 school clubs, years of community volunteering] Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!
  3. So, I heard that an A (80-89%) at York University which converts to a 3.8 on OMSAS is a 4.0 when converted to Amcas. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this. Thanks
  4. Hey everyone, So I'm planning to apply to US med schools this summer, and I want to apply as early as possible. I'm fine with using my current mcat score, but my cars is a little low (127) so I wanted to rewrite and improve cars before applying to canadian schools. Would I be allowed to submit my us applications without indicating that I'm planning to rewrite, and then rewrite sometime in august before my canadian apps? I'm worried that they'll find out that i re-wrote the test, and disqualify me for not updating my application
  5. Hey everyone, So it's my first time considering applying to American schools and I was hoping someone would be able to share some info about MSU. From what I can see, it looks as though they are relatively Canadian friendly, as anyone who is a Canadian citizen can apply with full consideration given to degrees obtained in Canada. However based on their admission statistics on MSAR, they only accepted 3 from 500 international applicants. Seeing as how MSU doesn't accept non-US citizens, non-US residents or non-Canadian citizens, does that mean in this case Canadians were considered international? Or were they considered out of state? Just figured I'd post on here before emailing them to see if I could get a quick response. Any info anyone might have would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  6. I have to provide 3 references for OMSAS and I have 4 to choose from: 1. A professor I published a paper with, over 2 weeks of 12-hour days of field and lab research in undergrad, who likes me but had admittedly little face to face time. Fish physiological research, 3rd author. 2. My volunteer coordinator at the local hospital, 140 hours, 2 years, just loves me, and has very high praise from the head nurses of the wards I've volunteered in. 3. A program coordinator and technician who teaches an entomology field research course I attended. Field research, 2 weeks, 2 other courses with him. Easily my #1 fan, would be a spectacular reference with high praise, but not a professor. 4. My graduate thesis supervisor. Medical science, diabetes and atherosclerosis. Just an amazing guy but I don't think he likes me very much. Its been an unusually hard year, I've struggled with family issues, anxiety and depression and as a result I've performed uncharacteristically poorly. Missing days without notice, coming in late, slow pace of research. He has every right to be annoyed. The lab, colleagues and supervisor have all been spectacular, but I've just really struggled to make a good impression with everything going on. I've spoken to him several times to check in and while he was pleased with my progress until recently, in the last two months he's seemed pretty frustrated. I've proactively apologized for missing days but haven't told him about the anxiety and depression. Anyway, TLDR: my supervisor and I have a complicated relationship. Would it be better to use references 1,2, and 3? Would it hurt if I didn't include him? (I know UofT required him as a reference, but I'm asking mostly for other schools)
