Hey everyone, I'm currently a third year undergrad, I haven't taken the MCAT yet but I'm feeling confident about it, and my current GPA is 3.5 (1st year: 3.23, 2nd year: 3.83) and this year it should be around 3.95. I was wondering because of my low GPA, how competitive my EC's would make me; I'm not sure how strong they are and I have absolutely no clue how to improve them, if anyone could offer any advice I would really appreciate it. President & founder of social justice club, legal affairs specialist (volunteer) for maternity research company, 3 case competitions (and poster presentations), exec for 2 health disparities clubs, mentor through two different programs, produce music during my freetime (hobby) and run 3 blogs; one health-related, one social justice-related, one about advice on how to apply to university/how to study effectively. I've worked at a telecommunications company for one summer and I've played the piano for 12 years, but don't have any references for it since it's also a hobby. I just started volunteering at a Hospice and have an interview for a distress centre line soon. I don't have any research or publication experience and I've sent out over 400 emails this season with no success, so I'm not sure what to do in that department. What I can say is that everything I've done so far has provided me with a meaningful experience that reinforced my desire to go to med school, but I'm not sure if I have enough on my plate to qualify to apply for this year. If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it, I'm feeling kind of burnt out and lost right now and beating myself up for not having done more. I'm in my third year and basically have no research or volunteering experience lol. I'm fine with doing a masters or a gap years if it comes down to it. Thank you in advance!

I have been hearing that all U of M looks at is GPA/MCAT/Casper. I have heard that they don't look at your ECs. Is this true?

Hi everyone I am a grade 11 student in Alberta and I was wondering if there are any research opportunities I can take before I enter undergraduate studies. My desired university is the University of Alberta. Additionally, it would be very helpful if you guys could share any research or health related extracurriculars you guys did in high school. Thanks!

Hi, so I may have the opportunity to go on a wildlife conservation mission in Thailand or Bali, however, I can also choose to go on a medical mission/learning thing in Vietnam or India. The wildlife conservation mission is really cool and more hands on while the medical missions are more seminar and workshops. For medical school, which would be a better option? It seems intuitive that the medical mission would be the better choice, but I feel that it might be very standard (like many people have done it) whereas the elephant conservation mission may be more unique. Thoughts?

Hey, When writing the ABS, how would I include things such as family babysitting or photography? Also, what verifiers would I put for things like this? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi! I know this might sound like a silly question but which Canadian medical schools focus the least on your extracurriculars?

Hi All, I'm not really sure what the difference between a volunteer and extracurricular activity is. I "volunteer" my time for "extracurricular" activities, and my "volunteer" activities are "extracurricular" because they occur outside the university curriculum. This is why it's kind of confusing. Someone told me that extracurricular activities are activities done in school, and volunteer activities are activities done outside of school (like in the community). What do you all think? Thank you very much!

Hey fellow grad students, Has anyone else who trained/mentored an undergrad student included this on their ABS? What category would it fall under? Thanks in advance!

Long story short, I do not have much hope in getting into a Canadian Medical school considering how there is only a handful of medical universities in Canada and would like an opinion on my chances of getting into a US medical school. I am finishing up my second year, and I am planning on taking the MACT next summer. Major: Kinesiology BSC GPA: 3.83 US GPA: 3.76 Course load: 4/5 (full time student, not full course load) Extra curricular: Own my own construction company since 2012 and have a multiple employees - the business is still running while I am studying, hence the reason for my course load not being full. I am still planning on applying to Canadian schools but am more hopeful of the United States. Any thoughts?

Hey guys, I'm a 2nd year looking to apply next cycle to many schools across the country. Definitely the 4 in Ontario (I'm IP), and potentially UBC/Calgary/Alberta. I'm currently figuring out what I'll be doing this summer, and it looks like I'll either get a tech job down in SF for 4 months or get a research scholarship/job at my university. I have no prior research experience and very minimal work experience, and I was wondering which of those two you think would be more beneficial for my application considering my situation. I think I'd be equally excited to pursue either as they're both interesting opportunities, so I'd just like to hear your input. Thanks!
