Hi everyone, I am in first year medicine and many of my classmates have started shadowing physicians in their specialty of interest already. I hadn't contacted anyone yet and was starting to get nervous that I was dropping the ball on this one. I got in contact with several physicians in pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties this week and I have set up some dates in the next few months to shadow. What I am wondering is: what should I expect? What will shadowing be all about (ex. will I be strictly observing or will there be some opportunities to practice my clinical skills)?

Okay so far I just had midterms and medicine has always been my dream. My parents actually have tried to discourage it from me telling me it takes too much time and they even told me to go to college which I ignored. Basically on reading week I got really sick and honestly this is really embarrassing to say but all of you are on your way to being doctors or already doctors so I will just say it. During my biology midterm I got a really bad case of diarrhea and I honestly rushed the midterm so fast because I had to get out of there. I ended up with a 63, my labs so far and assignments have all

Hey guys So currently, I've completed high school, moving on to McMaster university in the fall. I'm going into the chemical and physical sciences, hoping to major in medical physics. I've already picked out my courses for first year, which includes physics, chemistry, biology, and calculus courses. I'm a little concerned about taking the MCAT because I know that I will struggle with the critical reasoning and psychology (and sociology etc) portions. So I was wondering, is it too early to prepare for those sections this summer? I plan on applying to most med schools by 3rd

Hey guys So currently, I've completed high school, moving on to McMaster university in the fall. I'm going into the chemical and physical sciences, hoping to major in medical physics. I've already picked out my courses for first year, which includes physics, chemistry, biology, and calculus courses. I was wondering, what can I start doing now (or this fall) to make my self a strong candidate for med schools? Whether it'd be advice for what I should be doing on my spare time, or what kind of things I should be involved in, I'd appreciate any helpful tips. thanks- 12 replies

Hey guys I just finished my first year at mac with a GPA of 3.61 - this was mostly due to a C+ in Anthropology which I really regret taking and bad time management skills in other courses I have however identified my areas for improvement and the necessary changes I need to implement in my study habits to improve my academic outcomes. That being said, I calculated my cumulative GPA and discovered that even if I were to get straight 4.0 in my next 2 years of undergrad (which is possible) my cGPA would only be 3.86 Any advice on how I could improve my final cGPA ( either through sum

All my marks have been fine so far from A- to A+ for first year, but I got a B+ in one of my half year courses, and I know it's not the end of the world, but it has been bothering me, and I'm a little worried!! As long as I do much better in my second year, I just hope I still have a good chance of applying to med in third year, assuming my other stuff like MCAT and EC's is good? I don't know exactly what my current GPA is but I'm predicting for OMSAS it's going to be about 3.8?? I would appreciate it if I could hear about some of your experiences as third year applicants, like what the GPA ex

Hey guys! I'm currently in the process of planning my courses for my first year at Queen's. Since I'm considering to major or specialize in life sciences later on, I already know that I'll be talking CHEM 112, BIOL 102/103, MATH 121, and PHYS 117. I have space for an elective. I'm thinking about PSYC 100, which I heard is a very popular choice, plus I really enjoy studying psychology. However, I would like to apply to medical schools in the future, so I don't know if it would be a better idea to take English during first year to fill that specific prerequisite and not have to worry a

So I got into UTM for "Behaviour, Genetics and Neurobiology" and these are the courses I have to take for the program... Students in Behaviour, Genetics and Neurobiology take Biology, Calculus, Chemistry (BIO152H, BIO153H5, MAT134Y5, CHM140Y5).What other courses in first year do I have to take for pre requisites for med school? I did some research and it said "Prerequisite courses include two full courses in life sciences and one full course in social science or humanities or language. " for UofT Faculty of Medicine. In general, to be eligible to apply to UofT, McMaster, Western, etc. What c

Hi all, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that as each day passes I get more and more anxious/nervous for class to start. I was just wondering if any upper year students could share their thoughts on what their early experience was like, and provide any sage advice to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Ultimately, what were some of your major likes and/or dislikes at the onset, and how did you move through the process. Thanks
