Hello everyone, I’m a 2nd-year and last week I cold emailed some profs to be my supervisor as I apply for NSERC. Luckily, one agreed to be my supervisor and told me that he wanted to have a meeting this week. Since he didn’t specify the purpose of the meeting, my question is that will this serve as an interview or just a casual meeting to discuss the application? It doesn’t sound like an interview to me since he seems to have accepted me, but if it was, are there any tips? Thank you in advance!

Hi! I am currently in the process of applying for an NSERC, and have also just recently interviewed for medical school. The interview went really well, but I am afraid that I won't be allow to undergo the NSERC if I am accepted to medical school since I would be registered for a professional program... Anyone have a similar experience, or can point me in the right direction based on who I should contact?

I know it’s a long shot but I was wondering if anyone could comment on my chances at getting NSERC at uottawa. I don’t go to uottawa so I’m not exactly sure how my grades would be converted but I have a ~3.8 OMSAS GPA and have worked in a lab at uottawa the past two summers. Thanks!

I'm aware that NSERC USRA strongly looks at the students' GPA and what year they're in, but are they also looking for students who aren't from a complete science department? I'm double majoring in Biology and Visual Arts and I'm currently in first year. My first semester grade is a around a 3.3 GPA which isn't very high, so does NSERC USRA only look at your first semester grades?

I'm interested in applying for the NSERC USRA program at a few universities (UofWaterloo,Queens, etc..), but I'm just not sure about how students get paid? I'm sure it depends on the university you go to, but the schools I'm applying to aren't my institution so I have to think about living expenses and I'm confused about how they distribute the award. I'm new to this forum and I tried reading on their website, but I still don't understand the financial part, so thank you to those who can answer my question.

I did an NSERC last summer. I also wrote my MCAT two weeks after my lab work finished. I scored pretty badly because I did not have a lot of time to study (commuting over 3 hr, work). I wasn't very motivated to study because I came home stressed from being in a hostile lab environment; I felt like more of a burden in the lab and as if people didn't want me there as a student. The only reason I'm considering doing an NSERC while retaking the MCAT again is for the valuable research experience and possible connections with a prof. Is it really worth it? Should I just spend next summer solely on the MCAT? I just don't want to feel as if my summer is wasted if I don't do anything other than the MCAT...

Hi, Just wondering what sections I should include a summer studentship like the NSERC USRA? I was thinking of including it in the 1. employment section to talk about my work experience in the lab/duties, 2. to include it in the awards section to talk about the award and the necessary qualifications/competition involved, and 3. to include it in the research section to specifically talk about what my research was about. Is it okay to mention it in all 3 sections (I will be discussing different pieces of info in each section)? What do you all think? Thanks for the help!!

I worked on a project under an NSERC grant during one summer; after that summer, I stayed on as a volunteer (which is my current position). Should I create two OMSAS entries (ie. employment+volunteer), or lump it into one?

Is it realistic to hold an NSERC USRA and successfully prepare for the new MCAT in one summer? I would likely be writing the MCAT at the very beginning of September before the school year starts and my USRA would end in late August. Obviously I'd also study as much as possible during the period of the USRA but I'm curious as to whether people who have written the new MCAT believe that it's doable to achieve a high score while holding a USRA.

My PI filled out his Part II and for the "student's role" section, he didn't specifically indicate a project - will this be disadvantageous for me? He only wrote the specific task I will be doing - ie. immunohistochemical and immunocytochemical analysis of brain tissue collected from animal. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

Hey all, I am wondering if there are any Undergraduate Research Awards other than the NSERC since the advisor I would like to work with does not hold an NSERC grant. The field of study is cancer biology, pharmacology, therapeutics, health sciences. I am located in Manitoba so please avoid recommending province specific awards. Thanks!
